Due to the simplicity of circuit solutions, metal detectors such as BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) using the beat principle have become widespread. These devices are based on the phenomenon of the formation of beats that occur when two signals close in frequency are mixed (Fig. 1.2).

Metal detectors BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator), theory
Rice. 1.2. Simplified block diagram of a beating metal detector

BFO metal detectors use two oscillators tuned to the same frequency. In this case, the frequency of the reference (reference, exemplary) generator is unchanged. The measuring generator circuit coil is also a search or measuring coil.

When a metal object appears in the zone of the electromagnetic field excited by the search coil, the frequency of the measuring generator changes. The changed frequency signal is fed to the mixer, where it is mixed with the reference frequency signal. As a result, a signal with a beat frequency is allocated at the mixer output, which is fed to the display unit.

As an indicator in beat detectors, acoustic devices are usually used, however, there are designs with arrow and LED indicators. When using acoustic indicators, by changing the sign of the beats, it is quite easy to determine what metal, non-ferrous or black, is made of an object located in the area of the device.

It should be noted that the beat frequency in BFO metal detectors lies in the low-frequency range, closer to the lower limit of the sound perception of the human ear. This makes it possible to significantly simplify the design of the display unit, since the frequency beat of the main (measuring, search) and auxiliary (reference) oscillator can be analyzed by ear. However, the sensitivity of metal detectors operating on the principle of beats leaves much to be desired. Nevertheless, the characteristics of these devices will fully satisfy unpretentious users.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Acoustic sensors on military helmets will detect snipers 25.05.2009

Remembering the aphorism "If you want peace, prepare for war," American engineers are increasingly equipping the armor of their soldiers with all kinds of electronics.

Specialists from Vanderbilt University completed the development in 2006, and have now completed testing of a system that will help the infantryman during protracted street battles. These are four sensors on the helmet plus a processor and a transmitter. Sensors perceive shock waves from a shot from a sniper rifle and from a bullet flying at supersonic speed.

The processor determines the direction by the parameters of the first wave, and the distance to the shooter by the second wave. The sensitivity of the entire system would be low if the helmets of all the soldiers in the platoon were not equipped with similar sensors and the data did not enter the commander's computer.

The display of this computer displays information about the position of the sniper, even if he is perfectly camouflaged. The whole system weighs the same as the four AA batteries that power it, and costs 1000 US dollars, and it can be assembled from parts available on the market.
