ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RADIO ELECTRONICS AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Your electronic psychologist. Encyclopedia of radio electronics and electrical engineering Encyclopedia of radio electronics and electrical engineering / Electronics in medicine The range of electronic devices used by psychologists is constantly expanding. In addition to the "Polygraph" ("lie detector"), there are other devices for testing a person's psycho-emotional state. A distinctive feature of modern electronic psychologists is the visual and audio accompaniment of readings, the ability to connect to a computer and transmit data over long distances. A simple device of this type is not difficult to make if you have basic skills in assembling electrical circuits. The heart of the electronic psychologist will be the security alarm element, well known to all motorists - the pendulum swing sensor. The operation of such sensors can be observed by touching a car with an installed alarm system: the slightest sway of the body - and now the entire area is filled with a deafening howl. The design of the sensor is clear from the figure below. When the car body swings, the thin long pendulum rod also swings, which leads to the contacts closing. The sensitivity of the sensor can usually be adjusted, for example, using a slider. The position of the regulator increases or decreases the amplitude of oscillations by changing the length of the moving part of the pendulum. The question may arise, what does all this have to do with the psychological state of a person? It turns out that it is the most direct. Whether your hands are shaking or not - this is a method as old as time to determine the level of stress, anxiety, a person’s ability to control his body, to “control himself.” Having attached a car swing sensor to one hand of the subject or two sensors to each of the hands, we ask him to stretch his arms horizontally in front of him. A visual or audio alarm will record the fact of hand tremors and even determine the intensity of these involuntary movements. Of course, hands can shake for various reasons, in particular after intense physical activity. And yet, other things being equal, the mentioned method of controlling “tremors” (as fast rhythmic movements, trembling of body parts and limbs are called) allows one to obtain additional information of a psychological nature.
An electronic psychologist of this design is convenient due to its simplicity and, at the same time, the ability to connect various additional devices to increase the information content of the tests. Let's give a few examples. It costs nothing to assemble a circuit consisting of a pendulum swing sensor, a battery, an LED and a buzzer connected in series. With a very simple design, such a “psychologist” will already tell a lot about the presence and intensity of tremor in the language of light and sound signals. It can be made even simpler. If you have a digital multimeter like Mastech M-838, then it is equipped with the so-called “audio dialing” function. Set the multimeter switch to the “audible test” position and connect the probes of the device to the sensor terminals. When the sensor contacts are closed, the multimeter's buzzer will emit a characteristic sound signal - a tremor has appeared! It is possible to connect the described device to a computer on which a program for recording and editing sound should be installed (for example, the freely distributed audio file editor Audacity), and place a microphone next to the buzzer. By recording "tremor sounds" on a computer, you can analyze the frequency of hand tremors and how this parameter changes over time. Try asking the subject various questions, and you will see how the tremor characteristics change depending on the complexity of the question. Why not "Polygraph"? If you connect an audio frequency generator in series with the pendulum swing sensor to the computer sound card, the tremor signal can be recorded without using a buzzer and microphone. It is even easy to ensure signal transmission over long distances in cases where the subject is located in another geographical location. There are many options, including using Skype (also freely available) and IP telephony technology. Of course, both a regular phone and a mobile phone can be used to transmit tremor signals over long distances. The scope of application of electronic psychological devices is expanding day by day. Increasingly, they are used in such areas of human activity as physical education and sports. Thus, the definition of tremor and its indicators tells specialists how much the athlete controls his body, controls his emotions, how quickly he can calm down and relax after intense physical activity. All this helps to properly organize the training process and, ultimately, achieve high athletic performance. See other articles Section Electronics in medicine.
