The proposed luminaire (its diagram is shown in Fig. 1) is distinguished by an original lighting effect, increased reliability and a design that ensures electrical safety in operation. The following measures have been taken to improve reliability. Firstly, a film noise-suppressing capacitor (C1) with a rated voltage of 250 V AC, which is insensitive to overloads, is used as a ballast. In the absence of such a capacitor, it is permissible to use two K73-17 film capacitors connected in series with a capacity of 0,47 μF and a rated voltage of 630 V.

Secondly, a diode bridge RS107 (VD1) with a permissible reverse voltage of 1000 V was used to rectify the alternating voltage, which guarantees its safety even in the event of a breakdown of the ballast capacitor. It can also be assembled from separate diodes with a forward current of 1 A and a permissible reverse voltage of at least 700 V (for example, 1 N4007, FR107).

To limit the current pulse at the moment the device is turned on, resistor R2 is introduced into the network, and resistor R1 is used to quickly discharge the ballast capacitor after the nightlight is disconnected from the network. Zener diodes VD2, VD3 limit the output voltage of the power supply at a safe level when the cord that connects the rectifier to the lamp itself breaks.

The original visual effect is achieved through the use of flashing seven-color LEDs ARL-5013 RGBW-B-7 color slow. These two-pin LEDs are a device consisting of three light-emitting crystals (red, green and blue glow colors) placed in one transparent case and a control device for them. The latter contains a generator with a frequency of several megahertz and a frequency divider circuit with an output frequency of a fraction of a hertz. Such a high frequency of the master oscillator is explained by technological reasons - it is much easier to manufacture such a complex device than a small-sized high-capacity capacitor for timing circuits.

In addition, the control device includes a node that provides smooth switching on and off of each crystal by changing the width of switching pulses with phase overlap. As a result, each LED glows with all the colors of the rainbow. The brightness of the glow remains unchanged. The frequencies of the driving oscillators of the LEDs even of the same batch are slightly different, and this achieves an additional color effect, when from time to time the voltage phases on the LEDs coincide and they all shine in the same color. Capacitors C3-C7 eliminate the mutual influence of the LEDs.

Structurally, the device is made as follows. The power supply is assembled by surface mounting in the mains plug. Since all parts are under mains voltage, special attention was paid to electrical safety. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was used to insulate the luminaire itself, consisting of LEDs HL1-HL5 and capacitors C3-C7 connected in parallel to them.

Plastic bottles for carbonated drinks are made from this material. About 45 mm from the bottom side and 35 mm from the neck side are cut from a transparent colorless bottle. The LEDs are placed inside the conical part (Fig. 2).

Puncture its walls with an awl under the leads, insert them from the inside, connect them in series from the outside and solder a capacitor in parallel to each LED. In the bottom part, a hole is pierced with a heated soldering iron, into which the power cord is inserted. Its wires, observing the polarity, are soldered to the terminals of the extreme LEDs, after which the conical part (neck down) is lowered into the bottom of the bottle. As a result, the outputs of the LEDs, the capacitors and the places for connecting the power wires are insulated: from the outside - by the bottom of the bottle, from the inside - by the cone. The edges can be fastened with staples of a stationery stapler or transparent adhesive tape (adhesive tape).

From above, the lamp is covered with a small crystal vase - and the night light is ready. If you use serviceable parts and there are no errors in the installation, the device does not require adjustment.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Microcontroller MSP430F47X4 for electricity meters 18.07.2007

As manufacturers of electronic energy metering systems try to optimize product costs while increasing functionality and reducing power consumption, Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) has developed a new series of low power MSP430F47X4 microcontrollers for single and multi-phase energy meters.

The chip can contain up to four 16-bit sigma-delta ADCs, 32 32-bit hardware multipliers, a 160-segment LC display driver with contrast control, up to 60 kB of flash memory, and a real-time timer.

Also, the line of TI measuring systems contains devices specially designed for measuring the flow of liquids and gases, interfaces for organizing the transmission of information over power networks (PLC), radio frequencies in automatic meter reading systems. With a consumption of up to 1,5 μA, measuring devices built on new microcircuits can significantly reduce the power consumption of the entire system.

The F47x4 series microcontrollers have several different low power modes of operation and the meter consumes very little power between readings. The very short wake-up time of the controller allows it to enter the active mode in just 6 microseconds.
