Key switches with light indication are widely used in household and industrial electrical appliances for switching electrical loads of mains voltage. In these switches, the indicator circuit, connected in parallel with the load, is formed by a miniature glow discharge lamp (neon) with a current-limiting resistor (see Yushin A. Key switches with light indication. - Radio, 2005, No. 5, p. 52).

In key switches intended for switching lighting lamps, a similar circuit is connected in parallel with the contacts of the switch and the indicator lamp, on the contrary, shines when the load is off. These circuit solutions are extremely simple and extremely economical.

However, they also have a significant drawback. With the nominal resistance of the current-limiting resistor, the lamp life reaches several years of continuous operation, but the brightness of its glow in a number of practical applications is insufficient. You can increase the brightness by increasing the current through the lamp, but this sharply reduces its durability. Therefore, it is not uncommon to find a serviceable switch with a failed indicator.

One way out of the situation is to replace a faulty neon lamp with an LED with an ordinary silicon diode connected in opposite parallel, as shown in the diagram in Fig. 1. As an example, consider the process of finalizing the popular Legrand key switch (Fig. 2)

The procedure for removing a neon lamp and installing an LED in its place is illustrated in fig. 3. The decorative front panel is removed from the switch, and the indicator plug is removed from the rocker arm with an awl or a thin screwdriver. The lamp is pulled out with tweezers from the niche of the indicator plug and its terminals near the housing are bitten off with side cutters (Fig. 3, a).

Further, a hole with a diameter of 3 mm is drilled in the center of the upper end of the plug, and an LED with shortened and bent ones is placed in the niche opposite the hole, as shown in Fig. 3,6, leads and with a diode soldered to them Instead of a remote lamp, the leads of the LED indicator are soldered to its remaining leads.

Mains voltage is applied to the pins of the plug and the brightness of the light indication is verified. It remains to push the LED deep into the niche of the plug so that it enters the prepared hole and its leads are hidden in the niche, after which the indicator is installed in the switch.

To preserve the color and brightness of the light indication with a current-limiting resistor of 390 kOhm in the Legrand power switch, I used an L-934SGC high-brightness green LED. Instead of KD102A, diodes KD102B, KD104A are suitable.

The process of finalizing the "Legrand" power switch with two keys is practically no different. LEDs in this case, you can choose a different color.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Language influences thinking from infancy 02.08.2016

Usually we think that language only reflects the features of our vision, our thoughts and feelings. But can language itself influence our thinking?

The question arises at what age the influence of language on thinking first manifests itself. And, it would seem, the answer suggests itself that this happens in childhood, when the child learns to speak. Researchers from Northwestern University agree with this point of view, but with one caveat - according to their data, language begins to influence consciousness even before a person pronounces his first word.

Nine-month-olds, who were not yet able to speak, were shown brightly colored creatures that, appearing randomly in the middle of the screen, ran either to the left or right, and then disappeared. The essence of the experiment was that the "population" of beings was designated either by one word or by two words, and in the latter case one word was intended for those who move in one direction, and the other for those who move in the other direction. These words were heard by the children watching the creatures.

Then came the turn of the second part of the experiment: multi-colored creatures again appeared in the center of the screen, and psychologists carefully watched with the help of special equipment, where the children would look. In the direction of the child's gaze, one could understand what he expected from the creature - that it would move to the left or to the right. The point here was to understand whether there was a connection between the verbal categories denoting "right" beings and "left" beings, and thinking. The connection really appeared: those children who learned two categories predicted the movement of the figures quite well; but those who heard only one name common to all, could not predict the direction of movement.

It follows that even in the process of initial language acquisition and even before a person himself learns to speak, language categories affect both our perception and the ability to work and analyze what we managed to perceive.
