In the practice of a radio amateur, it is sometimes necessary to control the mains voltage and monitor its changes. The easiest way for this purpose is to make a voltmeter based on a pointer indicator and "stretch" its scale so that only a few tens of volts "fit" on it. A diagram of such a voltmeter is shown in the figure.

Stretched AC Voltmeter

The controlled voltage is fed through current-limiting resistors R1, R2 to a full-wave rectifier, made according to a bridge circuit on diodes VD1-VD4. The rectified voltage is filtered by capacitor C1 and fed to the microammeter RA1 through the trimmer resistor R4 and the emitter junction of the transistor VT1, which in this case operates as a low-voltage "zener diode".

While the voltage at the rectifier output does not exceed 6 ... 8 V, the indicator needle is at the zero mark of the scale. When it exceeds the breakdown voltage of the emitter junction of the transistor, the indicator needle will begin to deviate the more, the greater the voltage.

Resistor R3 regulate the sensitivity of the device, and R4 - the range of measured voltages. So, with zero resistance of the resistor R4, when its slider is in the left position according to the diagram, 20 V "fits" on the indicator scale, and it can be designed to measure voltage from 210 to 230 V. If the resistor slider is moved to the right according to the scheme position, the device will be able to "show" voltage from 100 to 250 V.

Microammeter - from the recording level indicator of a tape recorder, for example, M4476 / 1, M4587, M68501, or any other with a full deflection current of the arrow 50-300 μA. Transistor - any of the KT315 series, diodes, except those indicated on the diagram - KD102B, KD521A, any of the KD105 series or KTs407A diode bridge. Adjusted resistors - any type. After setting up the device, they can be replaced by constants of the desired denomination.

For adjustment, an autotransformer is used, from which voltage is supplied to the X1 plug, and a digital voltmeter that controls this voltage. Adjusted resistors R3 and R4 achieve the desired range of measured voltages, after which they calibrate the indicator scale or make a calibration graph to the scale.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Plextor M8V Plus Solid State Drives 26.10.2020

Plextor introduced the M8V Plus series of SSDs. This is the development of the M8V series, released at the beginning of 2018. Like its predecessor, the new series includes M.2-2280 and 2,5-inch models with SATA 6Gb/s interface.

The novelty is the use of Kioxia's 96-layer TLC NAND flash instead of Toshiba's 64-layer TLC NAND flash (remember, Kioxia was taken over by spin-off and renaming of Toshiba's respective business line). The choice in favor of memory with more density has allowed to increase the volume of drives. While the M8V series includes 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB models, the M8V Plus series includes 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB drives.

The Silicon Motion SM2258 controller has been updated to the latest version and now supports Plextor Plex Compress technology. Its essence lies in the fact that during idle moments, the controller compresses files that have not been accessed over the past 30 days or more. In addition, the Plex Turbo feature has been improved by increasing the area dynamically allocated for SLC caching.

Since the data transfer rate is limited by the capabilities of the interface, it has not changed. In sequential read mode, the speed reaches 560 MB / s, in sequential write mode - 520 MB / s. Performance on random access operations increased to 88 IOPS in the case of a 000 TB drive and up to 1 IOPS in the case of the other two varieties.

The manufacturer estimates a 256 GB drive resource at 140 TBW, a 512 GB drive at 280 TBW, and a 1 TB drive at 560 TBW. The drives come with a three-year warranty.
