Stonecrop, Sedum maximum L. Botanical description, range and habitats, chemical composition, use in medicine and industry

Cleansing large

Perennial herbaceous plant of the Crassulaceae family.

Leaves with heart-shaped amplexic base, entire, sometimes with 1-2 teeth at the base; inflorescence compound, racemose-paniculate. Roots thickened, fusiform, gradually thinning; stems are powerful, straight, reaching 40-80 cm.

The inflorescence is wide (6-10 cm wide), dense, corymbose-paniculate. The fruits are straight greenish. Seeds oblong-ovate, about 0,5 mm long.

Range and habitats. It grows in Eurasia, Africa, North and South America. Prefers meadows, dry slopes.

Chemical composition. The chemical composition of the plant has not been studied enough: it contains glycosides of the flavone group; the drug biosed was obtained from the herb.

Application in medicine. An aqueous extract from the herb stonecrop has biostimulating properties. It enhances the processes of metabolism and regeneration, has a general tonic and anti-inflammatory effect. In repeatedly anemized rabbits, biosed, administered repeatedly intramuscularly, increases the total blood protein, restores the normal ratio of albumin and globulin fractions, normalizes residual nitrogen and increases the content of fibrinogen in the blood.

It is used as an adjuvant in ophthalmic practice for burns of the cornea, fresh corneal opacities, for traumatic iridocyclitis, in dental practice for periodontal disease, in surgery to accelerate the consolidation of bone fragments, for joint contractures, for trophic ulcers of the leg, in therapy for gastric ulcer and duodenum.

The stonecrop is large. Application in cooking

Cleansing large

Stonecrop large - a perennial plant with thickened fleshy elongated leaves. The roots are fusiform thickened, rich in starch. In shape, the thickened roots resemble dahlia root tubers, only somewhat smaller, their length is 3-4, their width is 0,5-1,5 cm.

In Western and Central Europe, the large stonecrop is cultivated as a vegetable plant, even several cultivars have been bred. Not only tubers that replace potatoes are suitable for food, but also young leaves, shoots and stems. Shoots and leaves are used to make borscht, soups, mashed potatoes, minced vegetables.

In early spring, a large stonecrop can replace spinach, cabbage, lettuce. The fleshy roots are boiled, peeled and offal is obtained, suitable for the widest possible use.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Racing car of the future 08.12.2015

Formula 1 cars are often used to test new technologies that may in the future migrate to conventional cars. And where will the technology of the future for the racing cars themselves come from? This question was answered by McLaren, which recently showed the MP4-X Formula One concept car.

In collaboration with their racing partners, Honda, McLaren engineers came up with a number of ideas that they believe meet the requirements for the cars of the future. For example, given the general trend towards "electrification", including racing cars, recharging in a promising car will be carried out using the mutual induction of conductors in the car and on the track itself. A fundamentally new approach to the layout is also proposed, in which technological components are "packed" into structural elements - say, "thin" batteries are located in a protective frame, and solar panels are installed in the case for additional recharging and energy storage near the place of its use.

Another look into the future is the use of a protective cap in the future car. Formula 1 purists, of course, will not like this idea. However, all trends in the development of the organization, as well as accidents with serious consequences, indicate that the safety of drivers will become the most serious requirement, that is, a cap is indispensable.

But the most important difference of the future car is that it will not have a steering wheel and pedals. McLaren has partnered with international pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline to sponsor research into neuropathology, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The company hopes that the results of the research will help create a system that will allow you to drive a car using electrical brain impulses and gestures.
