What is the latitude and longitude?

Imagine that you are on board a ship lost in the ocean, or wandering through the desert, where there are no noticeable objects or landmarks. How would you be able to explain your exact location so that someone could find you?

It was for this purpose that the concepts of latitude and longitude were introduced. With their help, you can be found anywhere on the surface of the Earth, wherever you are. Latitude is used to locate an object in relation to the North and South Poles. At an equal distance between the poles lies an imaginary line called the equator. This is zero latitude.

Moving from the equator to the north, we find ourselves in the region of northern latitudes, to the south - southern. Latitudes are the same imaginary lines stretching around the Earth at regular intervals. They are parallel to each other and the equator and are therefore called parallels. The distance between these lines is not measured in kilometers, but in degrees.

If the circle is divided into 360 equal parts by lines passing through the center of the circle, then the angle between adjacent lines will be equal to one degree. For greater accuracy in determining the location, each degree is divided into 60 minutes, and each minute is divided into 60 seconds. The North Pole is at 90 degrees north and the South Pole is at 90 degrees south.

However, in order to accurately determine any place on the globe, it is not enough to know its position relative to the north and south, but also to the west and east. This is what longitude lines are for. Since there is no west or east pole, there is therefore no natural reference point.

A long time ago it was decided that the line of zero longitude passes through the Greenwich Laboratory, located in England on the eastern outskirts of London. The lines of longitude are called meridians. All of them run perpendicular to the equator and intersect each other at two points at the North and South Poles. To the east of the zero meridian is the region of eastern longitudes, to the west - western ones.

What is tundra?

The term "tundra" comes from a Finnish word that means "bad land" or "hostile territory". It is commonly used in reference to the treeless zone of the Arctic.

The tundra, of course, is not a very pleasant place to live. There are no trees, very low temperatures in winter, and in summer the average temperature is only 10 °C. There is very little rainfall, and strong winds blow all year round. Despite these conditions, various life forms exist in the tundra, and you might be interested to know which life forms can survive in such conditions.

The vegetation of the tundra is lichens that form a surface layer on rocks, moss that fills crevices in rocks and grows into coarse gravel, as well as some grasses and grass-like plants and some low shrubs. Most of the tundra plants are perennial, and their aquatic varieties are negligible. The number of animals is also small.

Lemmings, musk oxen and polar bears live in the tundra. A large number of birds hatch chicks in the tundra. Long daylight hours in summer allow birds to forage for many hours and feed large flocks of chicks. There are many ducks, geese and plovers in the tundra.

The soil layer in the tundra is very thin. It lies on permafrost. In summer, the top layer of permafrost thaws, and plant roots and bacteria begin to live. The tundra zone does not begin at one specific latitude. It differs across continents. But when you find yourself in the tundra, you will realize that you are in one of the harshest regions of the Earth.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Maxwell's artificial demon 21.01.2016

Physicists from Finland, Russia (Ivan Khaimovich from the Institute of Physics of Microstructures of the Russian Academy of Sciences) and the United States have created an autonomous artificial Maxwell demon.

A thought experiment with a demon was proposed in 1867 by the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell. The scientist thus wanted to draw attention to the apparent paradox of the second postulate of thermodynamics, according to which the entropy of a closed system does not decrease.

In his thought experiment, Maxwell took a closed gas cylinder and divided it into two parts by an inner wall with a small hatch. By opening and closing it, Maxwell's demon separates fast (hot) and slow (cold) particles.

This leads to the fact that a temperature difference is created in the gas cylinder, and heat is transferred from a colder gas to a hotter one, which violates the second law of thermodynamics. The paradox was resolved by the physicist Leo Szilard in 1929.

The system created by scientists is based on a single-electron transistor, which forms a small copper island connected to two superconducting aluminum leads. Maxwell's demon controls the movement of electrons through a transistor.

When a particle is on an island, the demon attracts it with a positive charge. If an electron leaves the island, the demon repels it with a negative charge, which leads to a decrease in the temperature of the system.
