I have made a large number of microwave field detectors of various designs, and after an article in "RL" N 11/92, I decided to share my experience in this area.

First, there are two unfortunate inaccuracies in the mentioned article. The first one is R24 rating - 820 Ohm, the second one - nowhere in the text it is indicated that the VD1 cathode is connected by the signal cable shield to the "ground" directly near VT1 (to reduce interference on the "ground" bus).

The microwave head is difficult to repeat at home, since turning and milling operations are required, so it is better to make a horn antenna (Fig. 1). It is simpler and does not need scarce fluoroplast. The waveguide and horn can be made of thin copper or tin plate. You can also use foil fiberglass, after polishing the foil and coating it with alcohol-rosin flux (so that it does not oxidize).

A board with parts is attached directly under the antenna. There are a lot of processing schemes, but I recommend the one shown in Fig. 2, which does not require adjustments and does not have adjustment elements.

In conclusion, I want to warn about the need for careful handling of microwave diodes. They are afraid of electrostatic electricity and during a breakdown, the sensitivity in the microwave field drops by an order of magnitude or more. The insidiousness of the situation is that when checked by a tester, a diode pierced by electrostatics behaves in exactly the same way as a serviceable one. Therefore, when working with microwave diodes, the same precautions must be observed as when working with MOSFETs.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Laptops run 25% longer with the new Google Chrome 16.11.2012

The new version of the Google Chrome 23 web browser for the Windows platform, the release of which Google announced on the official blog, allows you to extend the battery life of laptops in video playback mode over the Internet by 25%. This became possible thanks to the introduction of the video decoding function using the laptop's graphics accelerator, the task of which was shifted from the central processor, the company explained.

The test was conducted on a Lenovo T400 laptop with Windows 7 operating system while playing 1080p video at 30 fps. In addition, browser security has been improved, including support for the Do Not Track standard - it prohibits sites from tracking the resources that the user visits. With the advent of support in Chrome, this standard is now supported by all five of the most popular browsers.

Do Not Track support is available in Chrome 23 for all platforms, including Linux and Mac.
