The connection of steel parts by welding has recently become commonplace for many amateur craftsmen. In this regard, it should be noted that due to the high cost of factory-made welding machines, home-made devices powered by a 220 V mains are widely used. Their welding current is usually alternating.

Such devices are simple and inexpensive, but it is difficult to work with them, and the quality of the weld is often unsatisfactory. It is much more convenient to work on direct current, for which it is necessary to build a rectifier and a ballast choke into the apparatus. The scheme of the modified device is shown in the figure.

Finalization of the welding machine

For work in the rectifier VD1 - VD4, in addition to those indicated in the diagram, diodes D161-250, D161-320, V200 are suitable. They should be installed on heat sinks with a large effective surface. In the author's version, serial heat sinks 0171-80 are used.

The introduction of a choke makes it possible to significantly facilitate the ignition of the welding arc and ensures its greater stability. The L1 inductor is made on a magnetic circuit from a TS-270 mains transformer of an old tube TV. All windings of the transformer must be removed, and a winding of 20-30 turns of rectangular copper wire with an area of 16 ... 22 mm² should be wound on each of its frame. The windings are connected in series according to. Between the halves of the magnetic circuit, during assembly, it is necessary to put spacers made of textolite with a thickness of 0,3 ... 0,5 mm.

Structurally, the rectifier and choke are mounted as an autonomous attachment, which allows you to quickly change the type of welding current and facilitates the delivery of welding equipment to the place of work. The prefix was practically tested with various home-made welding machines and received good reviews from both experienced welders and beginners.

For those who are going to make the described prefix for themselves, we advise you to read the books of Gevorkyan V. G. (Fundamentals of welding. Textbook for technical schools, ed. 5, revised and additional - M .: Higher school, 1991), Chebovsky O. G (Power semiconductor devices. Handbook, ed. 2, revised and additional - M.: Energoatomizdat, 1985). In these books, readers will find a lot of useful information about the design of welding machines, materials for their manufacture and welding practice.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Chimpanzee language 28.05.2022

Chimpanzees use a fairly rich language to communicate, scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (Germany) concluded.

"Our results suggest that the chimpanzee's vocal communication system is much more complex and structured than previously thought," the researchers said.

As it turned out, in the language of primates there are sounds - "words" that animals are able to build in vocalizations - "sentences".

The researchers had to analyze more than five thousand sounds that were made by wild chimpanzees in the Tai National Park in Cote d'Ivoire. As a result, scientists were able to identify 390 unique vocal sequences.

Moreover, the chimpanzees exchanged them quite consciously. A large number of grunting, squeaking and puffing sounds were used for greetings, expressions of submission, messages about food, and so on.

Depending on the situation in which the monkey found himself, the sounds differed. Alone, at the sight of food, a chimpanzee makes a short sound, and surrounded by relatives, its longer version. A hooting sound warns of danger, and a series of such sounds indicates an appeal to a monkey of a higher rank.

The recording involved wild chimpanzees living in nature reserves, where they do not see a person and do not communicate with him in any way. In total, there were 49 adult individuals, the sounds of the cubs were not studied.

Anthropologists hope that further research on the language of monkeys will help to learn more about the origin of human language.
