ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RADIO ELECTRONICS AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Modification of the rocker switch. Encyclopedia of radio electronics and electrical engineering Encyclopedia of radio electronics and electrical engineering / Clocks, timers, relays, load switches The two-pole rocker, keyboard switch RS-201-8C is designed for switching AC voltage of 250 V, the maximum switching current is 15 A. It is often used as a mains switch, but, unfortunately, it does not have a built-in backlight unit. This shortcoming can be easily eliminated. Before describing the procedure for finalizing the switch, consider possible schemes for the backlight assembly. As a light source, it is advisable to use a high-brightness white LED. The choice of just such an LED is due to the fact that it can be used for a switch with a translucent key of any color. On fig. 1 shows the simplest diagram of connecting the HL1 LED to a 220 V network. It shines when the contacts of the SA1 switch are closed. The LED is powered by a pulsating voltage rectified by the VD2 diode. Resistor R1 limits the current through the LED, diode VD1 protects it from reverse voltage (the permissible value usually does not exceed a few volts). The disadvantage of such a backlight unit is the relatively weak glow of the LED, which, moreover, can flicker noticeably.
A diagram of a more advanced backlight unit, free from these shortcomings, is shown in Fig. 2. Here, the excess mains voltage extinguishes the ballast capacitor C1. A bridge AC voltage rectifier is assembled on diodes VD1-VD4. Resistors R1, R2 limit the current surges through the HL1 LED, rectifier diodes and capacitor. The LED, as in the first case, glows when the switch contacts are closed.
On fig. 3 shows a diagram of a node powered by an external DC voltage source. Resistors R1, R2 limit the operating current of the LED HL1.
To introduce the backlight assembly, the switch is disassembled. The translucent key is separated from the plastic switch housing using a thin knife or screwdriver. A super-bright LED with a diameter of 3 mm is installed in a cylindrical recess with a diameter of 3,5 mm in the switch housing, in the bottom of which two holes with a diameter of 1 mm are pre-drilled for its leads. Opposite the LED, in the opaque base of the key, a hole with a diameter of 3,3 mm is drilled. The appearance of the disassembled RS-201-8C switch with the LED installed is shown in fig. 4.
On the outside of the switch housing, two holes with a diameter of 3,3 mm are drilled in the partition (Fig. 5): one is for installing a protective diode VD1 (if the backlight assembly is performed according to the scheme in Fig. 1), the second is for fixing the wires going to the LED. The view of the assembled product with the LED on is shown in fig. 6.
In the backlight node, you can use any resistors of the ratings and dissipation power indicated on the diagrams (C1-4, C1-14, C2-23, C2-33, MLT, etc.). The capacitor is suitable for a film capacitor with a capacity of 0,047-0,068 uF with a rated DC voltage of 630 V (K73-17, K73-24) or an imported one with a rated AC voltage of 250.. .315 V. Possible replacement of diodes 1N4148 - 1 N914, 1SS244, KD510A, as well any of the series KD521, KD522; diode 1 N4006 - 1N4936GP, 1N4937GP, KD209A, KD221V, KD243D, as well as any of the 1N4005-1N4007, UF4005-UF4007 series. LED RL30-WH744D (white glow, brightness 5000 mCd, with a lens diameter of 3 mm) can be replaced by any similar super-bright one (the color of the glow can be the same as the color of the translucent key). LED backlight nodes can also be used to replace failed backlight nodes on glow discharge lamps in similar key switches and switches. In conclusion, it should be noted that the maximum value of alternating current 15 A (at a voltage of 250 V), specified in the technical characteristics of the IRS-201-8C, IRS-201-1C, RS-201-8C switches and other similar switching products, should be treated critically. The fact is that already at a current of 7 ... 10 A, the case of these switches begins to melt, therefore, for safety reasons, it is undesirable to use them for switching power more than 1000 W in 220 V AC circuits. An exception can be made only for devices operating in a short-term mode and under continuous supervision, such as vacuum cleaners. Author: A.
