The purpose of the RCD

At its core, the RCD is a high-speed protective switch that automatically disconnects the controlled electrical installation from the network in the event of a single-phase or three-phase asymmetrical earth leakage.

Leakage can be caused by a person touching current-carrying parts directly or through damaged insulation, contact of current-carrying elements with each other, if the insulating layer is broken, for example, due to fire.

Of all the known electrical protective equipment, the RCD is the only device that protects a person from electric shock in the event of direct contact with live parts.

RCD device

The main blocks of the RCD are shown in the block diagram (Fig. 14.14).

Purpose, device, scope of RCD
Rice. 14.14. The main blocks of the RCD: 1 - differential transformer that; 2 - threshold element; 3 - actuator 4 - testing circuit; 5 - power contacts

The functional most important unit of the RCD is a differential current transformer 1. In the vast majority of RCDs currently produced and operated around the world, it is the current transformer that is used as a differential current sensor. The trigger element (threshold element) 2 is made, as a rule, on sensitive magnetoelectric relays of direct action or electronic components.

The actuator 3 includes a power contact group with a drive mechanism. In normal mode, in the absence of differential current - leakage current, in the power circuit, the operating current of the load flows through the conductors passing through the window of the magnetic circuit of the current transformer 1.

Scope of RCD

RCDs are used to complete input distribution devices, switchboards, group shields (apartment and floor), as well as to protect individual consumers of electricity.

The scope of the RCD is quite wide - these are electrical installations:

  • public buildings;
  • residential buildings, individual and multi-apartment;
  • administrative buildings;
  • industrial premises, workshops;
  • industrial enterprises.

The exception is electrical installations that do not allow interruptions in power supply for technological reasons. In such installations, other electrical protective measures must be applied to protect people from electric shock - insulation control, isolation transformers, etc.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The fastest non-cluster supercomputer in the world 08.12.2013

Specialists of the Supercomputer Research Center (RSC) of the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) have created the world's first clustered supercomputer without switches. In the system, called CK-Star, eight computers are connected directly to each other. The product was based on Acer servers.

In traditional cluster supercomputers, interaction between nodes is organized using switches. As the number of nodes grows, switching becomes a performance bottleneck. In addition, switches consume significant power. According to some estimates, they can account for up to 50% of total energy consumption. According to the developers of CK-Star, the approach they have chosen allows them to grow the system without encountering these problems in principle.

The CK-Star uses an Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor. According to NCKU, performance as a percentage of the maximum theoretical was achieved at the level of 80,2% for a configuration with four nodes and 77,3% for eight. These are record numbers, surpassing the previous record (79,6% and 76,1% for four and eight nodes) held by Intel.

In addition to CK-Star, NCKU RSC researchers, in collaboration with Gigabyte specialists, have created the GS-R22PHL supercomputer, the performance of which reaches 3,7 TFLOPS. It is claimed to be the highest performing non-cluster supercomputer.
