Not all manufacturers use bipolar transistors as power switches when implementing self-oscillating circuits of electronic ballasts. For example, OSRAM in its popular 20-watt CFL (its appearance is shown in Fig. 3.45) of the DULUX EL LONG LIFE type, it uses MOSFET 11N50 (12N50) field-effect transistors.

These transistors are produced by many manufacturers, so additional letters may be present in the full designation, for example, IRFS11N50A. On fig. 3.46 shows a circuit diagram of the electronic ballast used in OSRAM DULUX EL LONG LIFE CFLs

Transistor parameters IRFS11N50A:

  • DC drain current ID -11 A;
  • surge current drain IDM - 44 A;
  • maximum drain-source voltage VDS - 500 V;
  • maximum power dissipation PD -170 W;
  • operating temperature range Tj - -55...+150 °C;
  • resistance in the open state - 0,52 Ohm;
  • total gate charge QG - 52 nC;
  • input capacitance CISS -1423 pF.

As a feature of the circuit, it can be noted that the transformer T1 is made on a W-shaped core of type 1115x5 with a non-magnetic gap of about 0,3 mm. Winding II, which has an inductance of 2,23 mH, also functions as a current-limiting choke for EL1.

In this electronic ballast, unlike Chinese counterparts, there is a noise suppression filter L1, C2, and the mode of preliminary heating of the EL1 electrodes using the RTS S1065 posistor is implemented, which has a positive effect on the service life of the CFL. Therefore, the presence of the words LONG LIFE (long life) in the name of the lamp is fully justified.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

GPS alternative works even underground 26.06.2023

Researchers from Japan propose a new alternative to the global positioning system (GPS), which will significantly improve the accuracy and expand the ability to navigate even in conditions where being in open space is impossible. Their idea is to use muons - particles that occur when the sun's rays interact with the Earth's atmosphere. Muons are able to penetrate any solid surface, which means that navigational equipment will function without the need to communicate with satellites in open space.

The most surprising thing about this concept of Japanese scientists is that the muon-based wireless navigation system allows you to determine objects even underground and in water. The basic principle of MuWNS (from the English. Muon Wireless Navigation System) is to continuously track the "signals" from muons, which form a continuous "rain" of particles. Every square meter of the Earth's surface is exposed to approximately 10 muons every minute.

Using special sensors, scientists managed to achieve high accuracy even in houses with basements - from 2 to 25 meters, depending on the depth and speed of human movement.

Although the practical application of such technologies is still in the distant future, researchers are already working to remove some of the limitations. They plan to improve the accuracy of the system by using atomic clocks, although these are currently too expensive for widespread use.

Another problem is the inability to capture the movement of objects in real time, so scientists need to develop methods to display and record the movement of objects or people in real time.

However, scientists believe that in the future this technology will be able to significantly enhance the functionality of GPS in areas where it is currently limited.
