Electromagnetic gear (choke starter) has a lot of disadvantages: annoying buzzing, involuntary flashes and frequent flickering coming from lamps using LL.

Its main and only advantage is its cheapness. But behind the low price of the throttle and starter, there are high operating costs and a lot of unpleasant factors that affect people's health.

European Commission Directive No. 2000/55/EC prescribed prohibition on the sale and use of electromagnetic ballasts in order to accelerate the widespread introduction of electronic ballasts (electronic ballasts) in the EU countries. In the USA, the use of electromagnetic ballasts was abandoned even earlier.

The directive of the EU Commission on the prohibition of the use of electromagnetic ballasts, perhaps with some delay, but will inevitably have an impact on the adoption of similar decisions in Russia. The experience of Belarus looks encouraging. New SNiPPs have already been developed and are in force today, prohibiting the installation of control gear (starters and chokes) in preschool and school institutions, educational institutions and hospitals, as well as in enterprises where high-quality lighting is required.

The rapid development of the electronics industry made it possible to create electronic gear, which provided a completely new quality of work for fluorescent lamps and fixtures.

The widespread use of electronic ballasts (they are also electronic ballasts, they are also electronic ballasts) is associated with a number of their significant advantages compared to electromagnetic ballasts. Let's divide them into four groups.

Group 1 - impact on health:

  • pleasant flicker-free light without stroboscopic effects and no noise due to operation in the range of 30-100 kHz;
  • weak electromagnetic field.

Group 2 - comfort:

  • reliable and fast (without blinking) ignition of lamps;
  • lighting stability regardless of mains voltage fluctuations;
  • the ability to adjust the luminous flux;
  • shutdown at the end of the lamp life.

Group 3 - economy:

  • high quality of consumed electricity - power factor close to unity due to the consumption of sinusoidal current with zero phase shift (when using an active power corrector);
  • reduced energy consumption by 20% (while maintaining the luminous flux) due to an increase in the light output of the lamp at an increased frequency and a higher efficiency of electronic ballasts compared to classical electromagnetic ballasts;
  • lamp life increased by 50% due to gentle operation and start-up;
  • reduced operating costs by reducing the number of lamps to be replaced and eliminating the need to replace starters;
  • additional energy saving up to 70% when working in lighting control systems.

Group 4 - environmental friendliness:

  • less waste of lamps (by 30%) due to an increase in the service life of the LL.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

New VCRs from Sony 24.05.2006

Sony continues to advance High-Definition Digital Video (HDV) by announcing two new video recorders, the HVR-M25U and HVR-M15U.

The devices support recording and playback of HDV 1080i, DVCAM and DV SP formats, making it easy and painless to upgrade to high definition. Other features of the decks include extensive connectivity (i.LINK (IEEE-1394) supported, component output, composite, analog and S-Video I/O).

The HVR-M25U is equipped with a 2,7" LCD display for enhanced control and Edge Crop, Duplicate Plus functions. A HVR-M15U, for example, can be installed both vertically and horizontally, making it a welcome addition to even the tightest of spaces.

Incidentally, both VCRs use standard film (for HDV professionals, Sony recommends Digital Master).
