In which fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm do all the animal characters die?

The Brothers Grimm have a fairy tale "About the death of a hen" in which all the animal characters die.

The action begins with the fact that the chicken choked on a nut, and the cockerel ran for water and was forced to perform various tasks. When he came back with water, the hen was already dead. Then the mice built a wagon to bury her, and along the way they gathered a lot of forest animals, but when they crossed the stream, they all drowned. The cockerel died of grief, sitting on the grave of the hen.

Why were German military airships equipped with a basket descended on a long cable?

Military airships during the First World War often flew at high altitudes to be out of reach of enemy artillery. In case of flight in the clouds, the Germans invented a basket descended on a cable up to a kilometer long. The telephone officer in it corrected the ship's course and gave commands to drop bombs. Crew members were generally very fond of such work, because the basket was the only place where smoking was allowed.

RCYL bicycle made from recycled plastic 29.04.2024

The issue of environmental sustainability is becoming increasingly relevant in the world of modern technology. In this context, the advent of a bicycle made from recycled plastic is gaining attention as an effective solution to the problem of environmental pollution. The idea for a bicycle made from recycled plastic came from the head of the German company igus, Frank Blaise, as a result of observing the limited lifespan of rental bicycles in Florida. Although the original prototype bike had a plastic frame, wheels, cranks and bearings, some components were still made of metal. Since then, the team has been looking for ways to increase the proportion of plastic parts in the design. The now renamed RCYL bike is made from 92% plastic, with half of it made from recycled plastic waste, including used fishing nets. Durable plastic ball bearings do not require lubrication. Among the non-plastic components of the bicycle ... >>

A computer the size of a business card and a millimeter thick 31.12.2019

Embedded systems engineer George Hilliard has created a computer that resembles a business card in size and design. He managed to reduce its cost to a minimum - his creation can be considered almost the cheapest computer in the world.

The computer is only stylized as a business card - Hilliard designed the card and printed it on a full-fledged two-layer printed circuit board. The thickness of the PC varies from 1 mm at the location of the components to 2 mm at the USB connector. This was necessary so that when connected to the USB connector, the computer was firmly held in it.

The cost of a PC business card, according to the engineer himself, does not exceed $2,88. At the same time, it can be used not only as a computer, but also as a USB drive. But still, in terms of its capabilities, Hilliard's brainchild falls short of popular single-board computers, including the Raspberry Pi Zero, which costs a little more - $ 5. On the other hand, in comparison with this model, a business card computer has at least one advantage.

The Raspberry Pi Zero comes without built-in memory, while Hilliard's invention has it, although it is only 8 MB (megabytes). The engineer provided two options for using the PC, and the first of them is the use as an external drive. In this case, it will fit about the same amount of information as can be written on five classic 3,5-inch floppy disks.

The second option is to use it for its intended purpose, that is, as a computer. The invention is based on the Allwinner F1C100s ARM processor, and the choice in favor of it was probably made due to its physical dimensions and capabilities, plus the author did not really want to mess with BGA soldering. A 10x10 mm chip also accommodates a 32-megabyte RAM module, which made it possible to reduce the number of microelectronic elements on a business card.

The computer runs Linux and comes with two Python interpreters. The entire software weighs in at about 2,4 MB and, according to the inventor, the system boots in just 6 seconds.
