ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RADIO ELECTRONICS AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Choice of car and home acoustic systems. Encyclopedia of radio electronics and electrical engineering Encyclopedia of radio electronics and electrical engineering / Speakers I have a desire to assemble speakers for the home based on a set of car acoustics for an approximate cost of $400. I think it's cheaper than buying ready-made ones. As much as possible? What are the specific differences between car speakers and those used in home speakers, incl. and related to the difference in the volumes of sounded premises? In the December 1998 issue, in the section "Out of the box", page 4, column 1, you write: "With a ratio of Fs / Qts = 67, this is a classic" closed "speaker, and specifically an automobile one." What is his "mobility"? In the same place, a little lower: "... 66 Hz. For a house - a bit high, but in a car, taking into account the transfer function of the cabin, it's the most." Please explain this thesis. Are there any characteristics that make it impossible to use car speakers in home speakers? Interesting plan. Just better not. First of all, car speakers with equal characteristics are always more expensive than non-car speakers, often quite noticeably. This is due to the need to ensure their survival in terrible operating conditions. Therefore, having purchased, say, four hundred speakers of the automotive nomenclature, you can be sure that half of this amount has gone into more expensive materials and technologies that provide climate resistance and a wide temperature range of heads. Do you need it at home? Among top-class car audio masters, the opposite was often found: unique speaker systems in cars were made on heads designed for home speakers. The most striking example: Earl Zausmer's BMW, one of the most famous cars on the planet, has B&W Nautilus speakers worth $11000. So: the owner changes the speakers to new ones every six months, because in hot Arizona during this time the suspensions fail. A similar case is known with Dynaudio acoustics. Automotive systems of this company are famous for their high cost (up to $ 1000 for a three-component system). At the same time, you can buy almost the same speakers, but specially produced by the company for lovers of acoustic creativity, for about 40% of this price. At one time, some of the installers were seduced by such a prospect, and as a result, claims began to appear. Dynaudio management even sent out a circular to all dealers explaining that there are no free cakes. The higher price of specifically car-specific Dynaudios includes the cost of these speakers never failing, unless by subversion methods. A series for do-it-yourselfers will work wonderfully in a heated room, pleasing to the ear and not forcing the wallet. This - with regard to price and technological differences. But there are also acoustic, mainly related to bass speakers. When we wrote about the "car-specific" subwoofer and the lower cut-off frequency, "too high for the home..." etc. The text meant the following. In the conditions of the room, if you need a lower cut-off frequency, say, 30 Hz, then this should be the case for the created speakers. And in a car, such speakers will desperately mumble, because the acoustics of a cramped cabin will cause a rise in the frequency response at low frequencies with a steepness of 12 dB / oct. Starting from about 50 - 80 Hz, depending on the size of the cabin. This means that somewhere in this range there should be a frequency below which the subwoofer output drops, preferably with the same steepness. If you start making speakers for your home on a car subwoofer, you will first overpay for the fact that it is stronger than usual, more resistant to overloads that do not exist at home - volume levels are usually lower there, better protected from aggressive environments, and so on. And only then you will find that you have received a very powerful, reliable, but with a worthless sound acoustic unit. You are quoting our opinion on the suitability of the speaker for a particular acoustic design in terms of Fs / Qts. When it is said that with a value of this parameter (energy bandwidth) greater than 100, the speaker is suitable for a phase inverter, and with significantly lower values - for a closed box, it is the automotive use of the head that is meant. For home audio needs, the "reference" value of this parameter will be different. So listen to our advice: build home acoustics on home speakers, and car acoustics on car speakers. And save money, and most importantly - it will be better to play. Here and there. Author: Denisyukov P., Tyumen; Publication: cxem.net See other articles Section Speakers.
