Used by many shortwave whip antennas without the use of matching devices, as a rule, have a high SWR. This is due to the fact that the input impedance of the whip antenna is quite small (about 30 ohms), therefore, when powered by a cable with a wave impedance of 50-75 ohms, the SWR is about 2-3.

Sometimes, to increase the input impedance of the antenna, the counterweights are placed not horizontally, but at an angle of 30-45 "to the horizon. The input impedance in this case increases, but the antenna begins to radiate at large angles to the horizon, which is undesirable when making long-distance communications.

The proposed omega-match compares favorably with the common gamma-match in ease of adjustment, since it does not require movement during the adjustment of the short-circuited jumper.

The described antenna is a vertical quarter-wave vibrator with a grounded base and horizontal counterweights (see figure).

The geometric dimensions for various ranges are given in table. one.

The diameter of the matching rod should be three to four times smaller than the diameter of the vibrator. A short-circuited jumper is attached permanently, and all antenna tuning is carried out using two variable capacitors located at the base of the vibrator. Capacitor C1 is used to compensate for the inductive component of impedance, and capacitor C2 allows you to quickly and accurately match the input impedance of the antenna with the wave impedance of the cable.

In this design, capacitors KPK-1 and KPK-2 were used. The maximum values of capacitances C1 and C2 are shown in Table. 2.

Antenna tuning is carried out using an SWR meter or a field indicator. After tuning, the capacitors are enclosed in a moisture-proof box.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Bone hormone suppresses appetite 20.03.2017

In the bones, in addition to mineral salts, there are cells that perform different functions. In particular, the role of cells called osteoblasts is to produce the very substance of bone - collagen protein filaments mineralized with calcium salts.

However, “bone synthesis” is not the only function of osteoblasts: American scientists have found that these cells, among other things, secrete the protein lipocalin 2 (LCN2), which strongly suppresses appetite. It is known that lipocalin 2 is synthesized by adipose tissue, but osteoblasts, as it turned out, produce it ten times more.

When mice cut off the lipocalin 2 gene in bone cells, the levels of the hormone in the animals dropped 67 times, the mice began to eat more, accumulate fat and gain weight. Conversely, when obese mice were injected with LCN2, the animals ate less and lost weight; in addition, their insulin levels increased and glucose metabolism returned to normal. As everyone is well aware, low insulin levels and high blood glucose levels are signs of incipient (or already onset) diabetes, so lipocalin 2 actually relieved diabetic symptoms.

One of the main centers for the regulation of appetite, hunger, and eating behavior in general is the hypothalamus, so it could be expected that lipocalin 2 somehow interacts with it. Indeed, it turned out that the hormone passes into the brain, and especially a lot of it accumulates just in the hypothalamus. If lipocalin 2 was injected directly into the brain of mice, the effect was the same as from injection into the blood - the animals' appetite weakened and body weight decreased.

Further experiments showed that the hormone binds to melonocortin receptors, which are known for being actively involved in the regulation of appetite. When lipocalin 2 was injected into the hypothalamus of mice, it was cells with melanocortin receptors that responded to it. By turning the receptor genes on and off, the researchers found that both changes in appetite and changes in weight depend on the interaction of lipocalin with melanocortin receptors.
