Most oscillator circuits have a non-linear signal level control that maintains oscillation of a certain amplitude with minimal output distortion. Some circuits use the amplitude of the output signal to control the resistance of a circuit element (eg, a JFET) operating in the triode region, while others control it through an amplitude limiter circuit. For example, Encarna Garcia (Spain) proposed a limiter circuit with a "soft" characteristic to minimize the non-linear distortion of the output signal.

The circuit (Fig. 1) contains a simple step-phase-shifting RC oscillator and an amplitude limiter circuit. The frequency F0 of the output voltage Vout is described by the formula:

F0=SQRT(6)/(2*PI*R*C) = SQRT(6)/(2*PI*10кОм*1нФ).

The inverting amplifier block contains a differential transistor pair Q1 and Q2 which defines the non-linear transfer characteristic. On the operational amplifier IC1, a current-to-voltage converter is made.

For oscillation to occur, the gain of the inverting amplifier must be greater than 29. Choosing the appropriate bias current IEE and emitter pair resistors RE1, RE2, and RE3 provides gain with a non-linear transfer characteristic Vout from Vin (Figure 2).

At low values of the input voltage, the transfer characteristic of the amplifier is almost linear, at large values, the operation of transistors Q1 and Q2 occurs in a non-linear region, reducing the gain of the amplifier (creates a gradual bend in the transfer characteristic).

The current regulator on transistors Q3 and Q4 controls the operation of the operational amplifier IC1, which generates the output signal Vout.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

5G could hurt weather forecasts 21.05.2019

According to scientists, smartphones with support for fifth-generation networks will create interference that will reduce the accuracy of weather forecasting by almost a third - by 30%.

During a speech to US congressmen, the acting head of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Neil Jacobs, spoke about the potential harm from the deployment of fifth-generation mobile networks.

The fact is that, according to scientists, smartphones with 5G support will create interference that will reduce the accuracy of forecasting weather conditions by almost a third - by 30%. And all because in the process of formation of water vapor, weak signals at a frequency of 23,8 GHz enter the atmosphere, which are precisely what meteorologists “catch”, while in 5G it is planned to use very close frequencies of 24 GHz.

Jacobs noted that this would set meteorology back almost forty years, since it was in 1980 that forecasting was inferior to the modern one by the same 30%. It seems, well, what's wrong with the fact that the forecast will be wrong by a couple of degrees? Not that meteorologists' predictions are super accurate right now. However, such changes can have very significant implications when it comes to predicting the movement of hurricanes that can lead to widespread destruction and loss of life.

Reducing the accuracy of forecasts by 30% can lead to the fact that people living in the affected area will have two or even three days less to prepare for a natural disaster or evacuate.
