On modern personal computers, the system speaker is used infrequently, which is quite understandable, since stereo sound cards have long appeared. But nevertheless, the system speaker is necessary, for example, for signaling during boot or when the computer freezes. It sounds quite loud, which is sometimes annoying, it is undesirable to turn it off, and it does not have a volume control...
Since there is no need to quickly adjust the volume of the system speaker (it is enough to adjust it once to your liking), then for this purpose you can use only one resistor connected in series with the speaker (Fig. 1.1). Its resistance should be selected within 100 ... 1000 Ohm, power 0.25 or 0.5 W. With a resistor resistance of 0 ... 100 Ohm, the volume of the speaker is quite large and practically does not decrease.

If you have some free time and desire, you can even assemble a small circuit that allows you to change the volume of the system speaker from time to time. One of the possible options is shown in Fig. 1.2. The peculiarity of the circuit is that the volume control is connected directly to the speaker, but this is quite justified, since there is simply no other way to adjust the volume in this case. A similar inclusion is used in wired broadcasting subscriber receivers. The variable resistor R2 must belong to group C (logarithmic dependence) or A (linear dependence), its resistance must be within 1 ... 3.3 kOhm, power 0.25 or 0.5 W.
