Today, many cell phones are equipped with an IrDA infrared port, with which it is easy to establish communication with a personal computer that has a similar port.

Although most computer motherboards have an integrated IrDA controller, the difficulty lies in the fact that the port adapter (the IR transceiver itself) is usually not included in the kit, and it is difficult to purchase it separately. The proposed home-made IrDA adapter, which is easy to manufacture and does not contain scarce parts, will solve the problem. It has been tested with various motherboards with Pentium - Pentium 4 processors under Windows 98/2000/XP operating systems.

The adapter diagram is shown in fig. one.

Its transmitting unit is a pulse amplifier based on a VT3 transistor, the collector circuit of which includes an IR emitting diode VD2 and an HL2 LED - a transmission signaling device. The receiving part consists of an IR photodiode VD1 and an amplifier based on a transistor VT2. Transistor VT1, opening during transmission, shunts the emitter junction of transistor VT2, preventing the reception of its own signals. LED HL1 allows you to visually monitor the reception. +5 V circuits, RX (received signal), TX (transmitted signal), and Common. connect with a four-wire cable (for example, a telephone cable) to the corresponding pins of the IrDA port connector on the computer motherboard. The purpose of the contacts can be determined by the inscriptions on the board or in its documentation.

The adapter is assembled on a single-sided printed circuit board measuring 16x25 mm (Fig. 2). It is shown on a 2:1 scale and is designed for surface mount resistors. They and the capacitor C2 of the same design are installed on the side of the printed conductors. To use conventional resistors and a capacitor, the dimensions of the board will have to be increased.

Instead of KT3107K transistors, others of the same series or KT361, KT502 series are suitable. Replacement for the KT3102A transistor - any of the KT3102, KT315, KT503 series. LEDs of the AL307 series, if necessary, can be replaced with any diameter of 3 or 5 mm, and the HL1 LED (reception indicator) is preferably green, and HL2 (transmission indicator) is red.

The AL156A emitting diode can be replaced with another IR range, including one removed from a faulty TV remote control. Replacing the photodiode FD-263-01 with a slower one is undesirable, this will lead to a noticeable decrease in the speed of information exchange.

After connecting the adapter to the computer motherboard, you need to run the BIOS Setup program and enable the IrDA controller in the Integrated Peripherals item (it may be called differently in different versions of the program). The computer's operating system should then automatically detect the "Built-in IR Device". To work with a cell phone, you may need to install a special driver software.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Burglar alarm for laptop 21.05.2005

The Korean corporation "David & Chris" has patented an "anti-theft device" for portable computers.

If you are afraid that the laptop might be stolen while you leave it on the table in the library, for example, go to the bookshelves, you can turn on the alarm - and if you try to take the computer away, the motion sensor based on the accelerometer will turn on the siren. Only the owner can turn it off by entering a password known to him from the keyboard.
