As you know, the fan in the power supplies of AT format computers rotates at a constant frequency, regardless of the temperature of the high-voltage transistor cases. However, the power supply does not always deliver maximum power to the load. The peak of power consumption occurs at the time of turning on the computer, and the next maximum - during the period of intensive disk exchange. If we also take into account the fact that the power of the power supply is usually selected with a margin even for maximum power consumption, it is easy to conclude that most of the time it is underloaded and the forced cooling of the heat sink of high-voltage transistors is excessive. In other words, the fan pumps cubic meters of air in vain, while creating quite a lot of noise and sucking dust into the case.

To reduce fan wear and reduce the overall noise level generated by the computer, you can use an automatic fan speed controller, the diagram of which is shown in fig. 1.

Refinement of the AT power supply

The temperature sensor is germanium diodes VD1 - VD4. included in the opposite direction in the base circuit of the composite transistor VT1VT2. The choice of diodes as a sensor is due to the fact that the dependence of the reverse current on temperature is more pronounced than the similar dependence of the resistance of thermistors. In addition, the glass case of these diodes makes it possible to do without any dielectric spacers when installing power supply transistors on the heat sink.

Resistor R1 eliminates the possibility of failure of transistors VT1, VT2 in the event of thermal breakdown of the diodes (for example, when the fan motor is jammed). Its resistance is chosen based on the maximum permissible value of the base current VT1. Resistor R2 determines the threshold for the regulator.

It should be noted that the number of temperature sensor diodes depends on the static current transfer coefficient of the composite transistor VT1VT2. If, with the resistance of the resistor R2 indicated on the diagram, room temperature and the power on, the fan impeller is stationary, the number of diodes should be increased. It is necessary to ensure that after applying the supply voltage, it confidently begins to rotate at a low frequency. Naturally, if with four sensor diodes the rotational speed turns out to be significantly higher than required, the number of diodes should be reduced.

The device is mounted in the power supply housing. The outputs of the same name of the diodes VD1 - VD4 are soldered together, placing their cases in the same plane close to each other. The resulting block is glued with BF-2 glue (or any other heat-resistant, for example, epoxy) to the heat sink of high-voltage transistors on the reverse side. Transistor VT2 with resistors R1, R2 soldered to its terminals and transistor VT1 (Fig. 2) are installed with the emitter output into the "cooler" hole of the power supply board.

Refinement of the AT power supply

Establishing the device is reduced to the selection of the resistor R2. Temporarily replacing it with a variable one (100-150 kOhm), they select such a resistance of the introduced part so that at a nominal load (the heat sinks of the power supply transistors are warm to the touch), the fan rotates at a low frequency.

Attention! To avoid electric shock (heat sinks are under high voltage!) You can "measure" the temperature by touch only by turning off the computer.

With a properly debugged device, the fan should not start immediately after turning on the computer, but after 2 ... 3 minutes after the power supply transistors have warmed up.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Liquid cooling system for XMG Oasis Mk2 laptops 31.07.2023

Schenker has unveiled an updated version of its XMG-branded liquid cooling system for laptops, dubbed the Oasis Mk2. Compared to the previous model, the new system has become more compact and quiet, and also received a number of useful improvements. It remains compatible with any XGM notebooks that support liquid cooling.

The dimensions of the device were significantly reduced from 203x186x75 mm to 195x166x72 mm, and the weight was reduced from 1,39 to 1,23 kg. In addition, Schenker has improved the noise level of the system with a new pump.

Additional improvements have also been made to the new model. The water filler has become more capacious, the rubber stopper has been replaced with a waterproof threaded cap, and the backlight has been updated to become dual-zone. All ports and connections are now located on the back of the case.

This update is now available for purchase at a price of 220 euros, making it an attractive choice for XMG notebook owners who want to improve the efficiency of their cooling system.
