ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RADIO ELECTRONICS AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING BLUETOOTH - what is it. Encyclopedia of radio electronics and electrical engineering Encyclopedia of radio electronics and electrical engineering / Computers In May 1998, five well-known companies - Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia and Toshiba - announced their intention to create a new wireless communication technology that should provide data and voice transmission over radio channels over short distances. At the same time, a special working group (Bluetooth Special Interest Group - BSIG) set up began to develop documents regulating the main areas of activity for the creation of a new technology called Bluetooth. The joint project, in theory, should allow to combine the achievements of each of the companies in the field of cordless communication. The responsibilities between the creators of the project were distributed as follows: Intel is responsible for improving chips and software (software), Nokia creates communication technologies and software for mobile phones, Ericsson develops chips and radio interface modules, and Toshiba and IBM are responsible for technical solutions for integrating Bluetooth into mobile devices. Now more than 700 companies are participating in this work, including Motorola, Lusent, 3COM, Qualcomm. All interested companies are invited to use the basic elements of the new technology free of charge to test the feasibility of its implementation in a variety of devices. Bluetooth will eliminate specialized cables used to exchange information between different devices and provide communication between them through a single port. For this purpose, built-in transceivers operating in the 2,4 GHz band will be used (this band is a free channel all over the world, which will make Bluetooth an international standard). It is assumed that at first the range of the system will be small - about 10 m, and then increase to 100 m. In this case, the connection between devices should not be interrupted even when they move, and also when they are, for example, in the user's pocket or a closed briefcase. According to the specification, the power consumption should be less than 0,1W. Initially, devices made with Bluetooth technology will cost about $20, and in the future, their cost will drop to $5. Using the new system will significantly expand the capabilities of the telephone. At home, he can serve as a radiotelephone connected to a fixed network, while traveling - mobile, and in the office - a telephone that works through the internal network of the company. Using Bluetooth technology, it will be possible to receive e-mail messages on a mobile phone, and then automatically forward them to a laptop computer, which can be in a briefcase or pocket. It will also be possible to send pictures taken with a digital camera connected to a mobile phone. And with the help of a mobile phone or PC, these pictures can be supplemented with the necessary comments and immediately sent to anywhere in the world. 3Com, for example, believes that in the future laptop users will be able to access the Internet and exchange e-mail messages without connecting to a telephone line. Users of PDAs will be able to select the required phone number in the electronic phone book and instruct their cell phone to dial it. It is possible that there will also be cordless headphones with a microphone that will allow car drivers to talk on a cell phone without taking their hands off the wheel. The creation of a new technology should help manufacturers reduce the cost of producing PCs and telecommunications by replacing many ports in equipment with a single Bluetooth port. In May 1999, another working group was formed to develop a single specification for short-range home radio networks (Shared Wireless Access Protocol). In addition, a joint venture Symbian has been organized, the purpose of which is to create a special operating system (OS). It should be noted that the emergence of a new sales market is closely monitored by Microsoft Corporation, which together with Qualcomm created the Wireless Knowledge company, whose activities are focused on the development of software and hardware for radio access to the Internet and corporate network services. It seems that the only thing holding back the rapid spread of new technology is rather high prices. But the demand for such communication devices is constantly growing, especially in the corporate sector. After all, modern business requires greater mobility. The developers hope that Bluetooth technology will be actively demanded by the computer and telecommunications industries, and its implementation, in turn, will cause an increase in mobile data traffic and the growth of the mobile device market.
