The American telecom operator Verizon has filed a patent application that describes a set-top box that watches the viewer while watching programs. The intelligent system analyzes the actions of the viewer, identifies them and, based on the data received, provides appropriate advertising.

The patent application was titled "Methods and Systems for Presenting Advertising Related to User External Actions". To identify these "external actions" a whole set of modules is used, it includes "depth sensor, imaging sensor, audio sensor and thermal sensor". This is enough to determine the following activities: "eating, exercising, laughing, reading, sleeping, talking, singing, humming, cleaning, and playing a musical instrument."

All this may seem somewhat unethical and shocking, but in reality there are no more reasons for concern than usual. Firstly, already now many large companies collect various information about users, about their addictions and the sites they visit, in particular, Facebook and Google do this in order to deliver ads to the direct target audience. And secondly, systems of this kind usually require confirmation from the user that he does not object to the collection of this information.
