Ziziphora fragrant

Lamiaceae family Lamiaceae Perennial herbaceous plant, strongly odorous.

Rhizome woody, thick, branched.

Stems 8-40 cm high, numerous, erect or rarely slightly ascending, covered with short, downcurved hairs. Leaves broadly elliptical, ovate or oblong-ovate, narrowed at the base into a petiole, entire or with obscure teeth, glandular-pointed, petioles 4-5 times shorter than the plates, pubescent with short hairs, bracts similar to stem leaves, but smaller than them, at the bottom parts ciliated along the edge, surrounding the inflorescence, often bent down.

Inflorescences at the tops of stems, capitate, almost spherical, dense, 1,5-3 cm in diameter; calyx 5-7 mm long, outside shortish protruding-hairy, reddening or sometimes completely dark purple, teeth acute-angled; corolla 10-12 mm long, almost one and a half times longer than the calyx, pinkish or light purple. The fruit is a nut.

Blooms in June - August.

Grows on rocky and rocky river banks, rocky and gravel slopes of hills and mountains.

It is found in Western and Eastern Siberia, in Altai, in Central Asia.

The aerial part of the plant contains an essential oil, which is a yellow liquid with a smell reminiscent of pulegi oil. Its composition, in addition to pulegone (constituting 45-60%), includes menthol, alpha-pinene, alcohols, ketones.

The florets have been tested and approved as a spice in fish processing.

Materials scientists from Illinois came up with a simple technology for growing copper nanowires. No matter how much they said that carbon nanotubes would become the very material that would make it possible to create a flat and bright display, however, for some reason, things would never come to practice.

In the meantime, materials scientists are improving the technology for producing metal whiskers - the thinnest crystals, the forest of which can be grown on a substrate. In particular, scientists from the University of Illinois, led by Professor Kekyen Kim, have learned how to grow forests from copper wires with a diameter of 70 to 250 nm.

Moreover, unlike nanotubes, without the use of any catalysts and at a more or less normal temperature - 200-300 K. First, they grew copper whiskers by chemical vapor deposition on the surface of a silicon plate, on which a pattern was previously applied.

They turned out to be straight, pentagonal, and ended in sharp pentagonal pyramids, which were excellent for emitting electrons. Indeed, they made a good cathode for an emission display: an electric field is applied to a block of whiskers, and they emit electrons that fly onto a phosphor-coated screen, causing it to glow.
