A little free time and a minimum of parts will be needed to assemble the proposed probe (Fig. 2), with which you can not only approximately estimate the capacitance of the tested capacitors, but also identify those whose leakage current exceeds 100 μA The "main part" of the probe is piezoceramic sounder BF1 with built-in generator. If you connect the capacitor Cx to the sockets XS1, XS2 and press the SB1 button, the capacitor will start charging through the sound emitter. A beep will sound.

Probe for testing oxide capacitors

As the capacitor charges, the current in the circuit will decrease, the voltage across the sound emitter will drop. The sound will fade. When the voltage on the sounder becomes less than 1 V, the sound will stop.

The duration of the beep depends on the capacitance of the capacitor. If it is 0,1uF, a short click will be heard. And with a capacitance of 4700 microfarads, the sound is heard for 25 seconds.

Resistor R1 quickly discharges the capacitor when the button is released. Diodes VD1, VD2 protect the sound emitter if a charged capacitor is connected to the sockets when the button is accidentally pressed.

If the capacitor being tested has a significant leakage current, or is accidentally connected to the sockets in reverse polarity, a constant sound will be heard, but with a lower volume. The same effect is observed when testing capacitors with a capacity of more than 470 microfarads with a significant leakage current.

It is easy to guess that you can estimate the approximate capacitance of the capacitor by the duration of the sound when the capacitor is connected to the probe sockets, and the leakage current can be estimated by reducing the volume of the sound or stopping it.

It is permissible to test capacitors with a rated voltage of 6,3 V with a probe. If you need to check lower-voltage (but not less than 3 V) capacitors, you should halve the voltage of the supply battery. In any case, protective diodes can be any of the series KD105, KD208, KD209, KD243. Power source - battery "Krona" or a power supply with an output voltage of 6 ... 10 V.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Proposed method of cooling the Earth 20.04.2019

More and more experts suggest that the consequences of global warming can be catastrophic for humanity, and some of the methods of struggle proposed today may themselves be fraught with danger.

Scientists at the California Institute for Planetary Research (USA) have come up with an unexpected way to save humanity with the help of salt.

Scientist Robert Nelson has suggested that spraying salt into the upper troposphere could be an effective solution to the problem. This measure could "cool" the Earth without creating a threat to it. Its small particles could lead to the fact that less infrared rays from the Sun would reach the surface of our planet. The planet would thus heat up less, which would slow down the process of global warming.

A computer model built by scientists reportedly showed that such a method, potentially, could be quite effective.
