In this case, all elements are connected to the circuit one after another. A serial connection does not make it possible to get a branched chain - it will be unbranched.

On fig. 1 shows an example of a series connection of elements in a circuit. In our example, two resistors are taken.

Resistors 1 and 2 have resistances R₁ and R₂. Since the electric charge does not accumulate in this case (direct current), the same charge passes for any section of the conductor in a certain time interval. From this it follows that the current strength in both resistors is equal to:

I = I₁ = I₂

But the voltage at their ends is summed up:

U = U₁ + U₂

According to Ohm's law, for the entire section of the circuit for each resistor individually, the impedance of the circuit will be:

R=R₁ + R₂

In the case of a series connection of conductors, voltage and resistance can be expressed by the relation:

U₁/U₂ = R₁/R₂
