In Russia, there is a significant unrealized backlog in the field of wind energy. Fundamental research into windmill aerodynamics carried out at TsAGI laid the foundation for modern wind turbines with a high wind energy utilization factor. However, a rigid focus on large hydropower and a coal-nuclear strategy and an almost complete deafness to innovations and environmental problems slowed down the development of wind energy for a long time.

The wind turbines manufactured by Vetroen did not meet modern requirements and high-tech ideas of the wind energy industry. The impetus for further promotion and creation of modern wind power equipment was the federal scientific and technical program "Environmentally Clean Energy". The best projects of wind power plants of various power classes were selected to participate and receive funding. Projects of wind turbines with a capacity of up to 30 kW, 100 kW, 250 kW, 1250 kW were developed.

The beginning of perestroika, the collapse of the economy and the termination of funding under the program did not allow these projects to be brought to a commercial level. Almost all projects remained at the level of prototypes and prototypes. A prototype of a megawatt-class wind turbine was designed and built by the Raduga Design Bureau, which organized cooperation between aviation industry enterprises. Development, manufacture and construction was financed by the government of Kalmykia. The wind turbine was built near Elista and is successfully operating, generating 2300-2900 thousand kWh of electricity per year. The wind turbine is connected to the network. In MKB "Raduga" wind turbines with a capacity of 8 kW and 250 kW were designed. The Russian Wind Energy Development Association "Energobalance Sovena" together with the German company Husumer SchiffsWert (HSW) manufactured 10 network wind turbines with a unit capacity of 30 kW. A wind farm with an installed capacity of 300 kW was built in 1996 in the Rostov region and put into operation.

Today, the following scenarios for the development of wind energy in Russia are possible:

  • purchase and installation of foreign wind turbines;
  • transfer of Western technologies and organization of production in Russia;
  • cooperation with foreign companies and production of wind turbines in Russia;
  • organization of production of own wind turbines, the know-how of which is protected by international law.

For Russia, the latter scenario is preferable, but it is constrained by the existing tax legislation, the monopoly of electricity producers, the lack of investment and the collapse of production.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Revolutionary Tape Technology 11.05.2014

The new technology will help increase the amount of data on tape cartridges by 74 times - up to 148 Gbit per square meter. inch.

Magnetic tape cartridges today do not seem to be the most modern media for storing information. However, for storing large amounts of data at an affordable price, nothing better has yet been invented. Sony believes that in anticipation of the influx of Big Data, it is necessary to look for new materials for magnetic tapes that will significantly increase the recording density.

The LTO-6 cartridge in use today (LTO Ultrium format) is capable of storing up to 2,5 TB of uncompressed data, which corresponds to a recording density of about 2 Gb/sq. inch. Sony believes that this no longer meets modern needs. For this reason, together with IBM, the Japanese have created a technology that can increase the capacity of a conventional cartridge by 1 times, i.e. up to 74TB per cartridge. In this case, the recording density will correspond to a value of approximately 185 Gb / 148kv. inch.

High-capacity magnetic tape consists of several layers, the main of which is a layer with grains of magnetic material. This layer is formed by vacuum spray deposition. Elementary magnetic grains in the new material have decreased from a few tens of nanometers to a size of about 7 nm. At the same time, the grain structure remained ordered, which increases the reliability of data storage.
