An active solar heating system can not only provide hot water, but also additional heating via a district heating system. To ensure the performance of such a system, the temperature of the central heating must be kept to a minimum (preferably around 50°C), and it is also necessary to store heat for heating. A successful solution is the combination of a solar heating system with floor heating, in which the floor acts as a heat accumulator.

Solar installations for space heating are less profitable than water heaters from both an economic and energy point of view, since heating is rarely needed in the summer. But if you need to heat rooms in the summer (for example, in mountainous areas), then heating installations become profitable. In Central Europe, for example, about 20% of the total heat load of a traditional house and about 50% of a low-energy house can be supplied by a modern active solar system equipped with a heat storage system. The remaining heat must be provided by an additional power plant. To increase the share of energy received from the Sun, it is necessary to increase the volume of the heat accumulator.

In Switzerland, solar installations are being built for private houses with well-insulated storage tanks with a capacity of 5-30m3 (the so-called Jenny systems), but they are expensive, and hot water storage is often impractical. The solar component of the Jenny system exceeds 50% and even reaches 100%.

If the system described above were fully powered by a solar water heating plant, a 25 m2 collector and an 85 m3 storage tank with 100 cm of thermal insulation would be needed.

Although it is technically possible to heat individual dwellings with solar energy, it is more cost effective today to invest in thermal insulation to reduce heating demand.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Earth Asteroid Shield 20.02.2012

Established in January 2012, an international group of scientists and engineers launched the NEOShield project. Over the next three and a half years, she will work to develop means to protect the Earth from asteroid impacts.
The exact date of the last fall of a large asteroid to Earth is unknown. But the surface of our planet still bears traces of cosmic bombardment, like the 6 km Nordlinger Ries crater in Bavaria.

A total of 13 organizations from research institutes and industrial companies will jointly explore technologies to prevent asteroid and comet impacts, in particular, ways to use special spacecraft to remove dangerous asteroids from orbit.

On the trajectory of approach to the Earth, asteroids usually have a speed of 5 to 30 kilometers per second. Existing examples of asteroid impacts, such as the 1,2-km Barringer crater in Arizona or the Tunguska region in Siberia, demonstrate the damage that space "guests" can cause. However, even smaller asteroids can cause massive destruction if they fall on a large city. So, the crater in Arizona was formed as a result of the fall of an object about 50 meters in diameter. Thousands of similar asteroids have been discovered over the past 50 years, which means that dangerous impacts with Earth are likely to occur every few hundred years.

In order to change the orbit of dangerous celestial bodies and prevent a collision with the planet, it is required to apply enormous energy at a strictly defined time. The NEOShield project will study the issues of determining the composition of the most dangerous asteroids, including using space probes.

One of the main tasks of the project is to develop technologies for the destruction or deflection of an asteroid. According to NEOShield experts, this can be achieved using a nuclear explosion or a space towing vehicle. The effectiveness of such methods remains to be seen.
It is possible that, based on the results of the work of the international group, "exercises" on asteroid defense will be carried out - using the appropriate space technology. In addition, the defense plan developed by NEOShield could be used against the asteroid Apophis, which will dangerously approach Earth in 2029.
