The mechanical energy of the wind wheel is transmitted through a gearbox and a split coupling to an asynchronous generator located in the wind turbine capsule. Direct current from several wind turbines that are part of the WPP is converted into alternating current with a standard frequency and fed into the power system. The world wind power industry has worked out methods for frequency synchronization and group regulation of wind turbines when working on a power system, maintaining frequency during shocks associated with a change in wind speed.

The ABB company proposed to use a high voltage DC generator (up to 20 kV) instead of an asynchronous generator. In this case, the gearbox, soft start system, and transformer become unnecessary, and the overall dimensions and weight of the capsule are accordingly reduced. The energy from the wind turbine is supplied by cable to the common converter of the station and from it to the network.

Wind speed varies during the day, experiences seasonal and other changes. Accordingly, the power generated by wind power plants changes, surges and dips in their share in the load of the power system take place. Therefore, in order to maintain the frequency of the current, it is necessary to have a reserve of reserve capacities in the power system. The easiest way to solve this problem is to work together on the power system of wind and hydraulic stations, including pumped storage power plants. The surplus energy that is generated by the wind farm during the hours of minimum consumption by the power system can be accumulated by pumping water into the pool located above. It can be used by pumping compressed air into underground tanks, or generating hydrogen fuel by electrolyzing water.

In Russia, the production of wind power plants "Rainbow" has been started at JSC "Tushino mashzavod". Russian power engineering has sufficient experience to solve mechanical and electromechanical problems in the development and production of wind turbines. True, there is no experience in manufacturing the most critical parts - large-sized wind turbine blades. Concerns have been raised about the installation rotor freezing in winter, especially when working on the coast of the Kola Peninsula, where cold air is adjacent to the non-freezing sea. According to the literature, in Denmark and northern Germany, operating wind turbines do not freeze in winter - apparently, the vibrations of the fiberglass blades shake off the adhering ice particles. However, when the wind turbine is stopped, the icing of the rotor can cause breakdowns.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Miniature Particle Accelerator Powering the Laser 23.07.2021

Chinese scientists have built a free electron laser, which can be considered a miniature (installation length - only 12 meters) version of multi-kilometer particle accelerators.

Physicists in China at the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics (SIOM) have used a small "wake field plasma accelerator" to power a laser called a free electron laser (FEL).

Physicists have long wanted to make particle accelerators more compact, so the work of Chinese scientists who have made significant progress towards this goal is encouraging. The Chinese free electron laser is still inferior to classical particle accelerators in terms of capabilities, but this is forgivable, given the relatively modest size of the facility.

The tiny FEL is very different from its larger counterparts, which generate beams billions of times brighter than other X-ray sources, with an energy spread of just 0,1%. It produces much weaker pulses of longer wavelength ultraviolet light with an energy spread of 2%.

With its length of 12 meters, it is nowhere near as good as its predecessors, which are several kilometers long. Nevertheless, the experiment marks a major breakthrough in the field of mini-accelerators.

Particle accelerators are workhorses in countless fields of science, they explode elementary particles and generate intense beams of X-rays to study biomolecules and materials. Such accelerators stretch for miles and cost $1 billion or more.
