After 10 years of experimentation, I came to the conclusion that the construction of omnidirectional antennas on the HF bands is impractical, primarily because of poor reception.

The absence of scarce aluminum pipes prompted the idea to make a modification of the PA0LU wire antenna at 14 MHz [1]. The essence of the revision is that instead of straight dipoles, bent dipoles are used (Fig. 1), and the middle points of the dipoles are fixed on a traverse, which is welded to a pipe segment installed in the mast on a plain bearing (Fig. 2).

Antenna tuning is the same as in [1]. To turn the antenna, nylon braces are removed that fasten the ends of the vibrator and director, then (manually or electrically) the traverse is unfolded, after which the ends of the elements are fixed in a new position by braces.

Similarly, you can make a three-element antenna. On this antenna (14 MHz), when operating CW and power 40 W, contacts were made with CX, LU, USA, JA.

Accordingly, by increasing the size, the antenna can also be used on the low-frequency ranges.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Mercedes-Benz luxury hybrid 20.09.2014

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the first luxury hybrid vehicle in its lineup. The German automaker does not intend to stop there and promises to release several hybrids at once, with the ability to recharge batteries from the home electrical network.

The Mercedes S550 Plug-in Hybrid is said to be the first luxury sedan on the market to combine the power of a V8 engine with the economy of a compact model. The novelty has a hybrid V6 engine with a total capacity of 436 hp, which allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5,2 seconds.

The hybrid modification of the flagship S-Class sedan of the new generation is equipped with an 85-kilowatt electric unit and a set of lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 8,7 kWh, which are charged from a 230-volt household network in 4 hours. Charging takes half the time when you connect a compatible charger to a dedicated 400-volt outlet.

Mercedes-Benz is currently testing a wireless charging system that the company is developing with BMW. The device will allow owners of hybrids and electric vehicles to charge batteries without the use of wires.

The German developers paid special attention to the efficiency of the S550 Plug-in Hybrid, although the car is able to drive a little more than 30 km on electric traction. The 7-speed automatic transmission is closely linked to electronic systems that evaluate the traffic situation. The box settings change automatically based on the current location and speed of cars moving nearby.

The gas pedal in the premium sedan is complemented by tactile feedback. When there is an opportunity to save fuel (for example, on a slope), by removing the foot from the accelerator or loosening its pressure on it, the driver will feel the vibration impulses that the "smart" system will apply to the pedal. In the same way, the person behind the wheel will be notified when the internal combustion engine is switched off for electric motor driving.

The start of sales of the Mercedes S550 Plug-in Hybrid is expected in 2015. According to preliminary data, the cost of the car will exceed $100.
