Smoking is dangerous not only with a 15-fold increase in the usual risk of lung cancer (if filtered cigarettes) or 20 times (if unfiltered cigarettes), but is also dangerous with heart attacks and the death of brain cells. The fact is that when smoking, not only nicotine is released, which contributes to the occurrence of lung cancer, but also CO - carbon monoxide, i.e. carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless poison, a product of any combustion. (Not to be confused with CO2 - carbon dioxide). Regular inhalation of carbon monoxide increases the risk of a heart attack. BBC Television English 1987, Part 4, p. 63 The data in this book are based on over 30 years of Framingham Heart Study data.

According to the latest research from the London Hazards Center Trust, regular carbon monoxide inhalation contributes to the destruction of brain cells, because. hemoglobin (a substance that carries oxygen to the cells of the body and is contained in red blood cells) begins to partially replace oxygen with carbon monoxide and transfer it to the cells. As a result of this process, brain cells receive oxygen, firstly, less than necessary, which leads to a decrease in mental activity, and, secondly, they are poisoned by this poison, as a result of which they die. And brain cells, as you know, are not restored. The danger of carbon monoxide is evidenced by the fact that when this poison is inhaled in large quantities (for example, when being indoors during a fire), death from suffocation and poisoning of the body occurs.

So even for the health of the brain and heart, smoking a folded piece of paper is harmful. And those who justify smoking on the grounds that it improves mental alertness will eventually find it increasingly difficult to think. And some more statistics about smoking. Out of a thousand people who smoke from a young age, 250 people will live an average of 10-15 years less and die from diseases caused by smoking. While traffic accidents (traffic accidents) on average will take only 1000 lives out of the same 6 people. BBC Television English 1987, Part 4, p. 56 Many people quite rightly try to cross the road with caution, although the risk of death is 6 out of 1000 (although this is probably more in England, in Russia). But at the same time, a significant part of people smoke and do not even know (although, I think, they already know now) that, in fact, the risk of death is already 250 out of 1000. Who will be this one in four?

The origin of the cat: the devil, turning into a mouse, sailed across the sea to seduce Eve. The Blessed Virgin, seeing this, threw down Her mitten. A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Edible gelatin robot 15.03.2017

Researchers at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne have published a scientific paper that talks about the creation of gelatin actuators - a technology that could eventually allow the creation of edible robots.

The research is still at an early stage, and the staff of the educational institution does not fully understand how this technology can be useful. In an interview with TechCrunch, Dario Floreano, director of the university's Intelligent Systems Lab, acknowledged that the team may not be operating in a very logical order. The work, presumably, was the result of a desire to create something new - using this mechanism, the researchers did not originally plan to solve some pressing problem.

"A year ago, alumnus and co-author Jun Shintake came to me and said, 'We make all these biological robots, but biological systems are edible and our systems are not,'" Floreano said. "I thought it was interesting. Food and robots have completely different limitations and properties, and before I even thought about what it could be, I thought that seeing if we could combine the two would be a very interesting challenge."

Floreano offered a list of potential uses for edible robots, including food that can move itself from colder to warmer places and vice versa, as well as independently reach a person or animal to feed it. This method could also be used for automated drug delivery.

A similar study last year by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology reported on the creation of an origami robot made from dried pig intestines that is placed in a person's stomach to remove swallowed items like batteries. However, the design of the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne differs in that its mechanisms are completely digestible and do not require extraction from the human body.

As for the taste qualities of such robots, the existing gelatin prototype has almost none. But the researchers decided to team up with the School of Hotel Management of Lausanne to create mechanisms that would be not only useful, but also tasty.
