Gelatin mass, combined with casein and hardened by the action of formaldehyde, does not ignite and is cheaper than celluloid. To obtain this mass, the following three solutions are prepared.

1st solution:

Soften 30 kg of gelatin in 30 liters of water for two days, then heat to 90 °C until completely dissolved. The solution is cooled to 45 °C and a solution of 1 kg of gallic acid is added to it, and everything is thoroughly mixed.

2st solution:

Knead 30 kg of ordinary commercial casein with 30 kg of ammonia with the addition of 8 liters of water. After 5-6 hours of standing, enough water is added to obtain a thin, cream-like dough. This mass is boiled for 1 hour and 2 kg of a solution of 10 wt. hours of rubber and 2 wt. hours of sulfur powder in 20 wt. hours of carbon disulfide. To this last solution is added, depending on the desired softness, a certain amount of glycerin.

3st solution:

Dissolve 40 kg of powdered rosin in the same amount of ammonia at the temperature of a water bath in a closed vessel equipped with a back-placed refrigerator.

All three solutions obtained in this way are mixed and thoroughly ground until a uniform dough-like mass is obtained.

The mass is poured into molds, pressed under high pressure and dried. Dried sheets are placed in a solution of 1 wt. hours of formalin in 4 wt. hours of water for a more or less long time, then dried again, after which the mass is ready for dressing various items.
