Origin: The original source is the tragedy "Boris Godunov" (1825) by L. S. Pushkin (1799-1837), the monologue of Tsar Boris (the scene "The Tsar's Chambers"): "Living power is hateful for the mob, // They know how to love only the dead."

Origin:

The word became winged after more than a thousand people died on May 18, 1896 on the Khodynka field near Moscow during the "folk festivals" arranged on the occasion of the coronation of the Russian Emperor Nicholas II. They died in a stampede after the crowd moved to the tables where, as previously announced, royal gifts were to be distributed. According to official information cited by the Minister of Justice N. V. Muravyov, "the total number of persons who received injuries on May 18 during the festivities on the Khodynka field, according to the information collected during the investigation, reached 2690 people, of whom 1389 died" (TsGIAM, f. 540, op. 1, file 720). The poet Konstantin Balmont wrote the poem "Our Tsar" about this tragic event, the final lines of which turned out to be prophetic: "Who began to reign - Khodynka, / He will end - standing on the scaffold."
