How to give plaster hardness?

It is known that gypsum, mixed with water and then hardened, does not differ in strength: it becomes extremely brittle and therefore finds relatively little use for itself. In order to remedy this deficiency and to impart greater hardness to gypsum, the following method is used in America: 6 parts of gypsum are mixed with 1 part of slaked lime, and this mixture is then manipulated as with ordinary gypsum.

Items made from such a mixture, after good drying, are impregnated with a solution of zinc sulfate. Objects made of gypsum treated in this way are much stronger than ordinary gypsum crafts.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The pleasure of new words 08.11.2014

Remembering new words, we experience pleasure, say researchers from the Otto von Guericke University (Germany) and the University of Barcelona (Spain). The experiment of Pablo Ripolles and his colleagues involved more than thirty adult volunteers who had to understand the meaning of a word from two suggestive sentences. For example, if one sentence reads "The whole family dine at table" and the second sentence reads "Table is made of wood", then from the context we can understand that table means table.

At the same time, while the person was trying to understand the meaning of the words, neuroscientists monitored the activity of his brain using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). After the language task, the volunteers had to play a certain game twice, in which winning meant a monetary reward - the game test was also conducted under fMRI observation.

In an article in Current Biology, the authors write that learning new words stimulated activity in the ventral striatum, or striatum. This is an important part of the brain, which, among other things, is part of the reinforcement system: impulses running through the striatum are directly related to motivation, pleasure, expectation of reward, goal setting, etc. And just its ventral part is especially strongly involved here, namely it works when we feel pleasure from food, sex, monetary gain, it is in it that one of the causes of drug addiction lies. Not surprisingly, her activity increased while playing for money. Interestingly, the striatum reacted to new words in the same way as to a monetary gain.

In addition, success in learning new words depended on the state of the white matter in the striatum. White matter plays the role of wires connecting different areas of the brain; and the more it is, for example, in the striatum, it means that it is more integrated with other brain "departments", the more actively it exchanges data with them.

The striatum itself has nothing to do with the language function, it does not decipher the meanings of words and does not remember them, for this there are special linguistic centers in the cerebral cortex. However, he seems to reinforce the motivation to learn the language by responding to linguistic efforts with a sense of pleasure - pleasant emotions help memorize new material.
