Those who have worked with small parts know how difficult it is to drill holes in them, the axes of which would be strictly perpendicular to the plane. The slightest distortion leads to marriage, and often to breakage of the drill. And the holes themselves are far from being cylindrical.

To avoid these troubles, I made a drilling machine based on a hand drill. Its design is very simple.

First of all, about the materials. You will need a few of them: a piece of chipboard 20-25 mm thick, a small sheet of plywood 10 mm thick, a duralumin corner 30x30 mm in size, a piece of metal tube Ø 20-25 mm with a wall of 1,5-2 mm, as well as EDP-epoxy glue 2 and epoxy putty.

Rice. 1. Drilling machine: 1 - base, 2 - drill nut, 3 - guide tubes, 4 - slider, 5 - hand drill, 6 - sockets for fixing a hand drill, 7 - metal clamps

It is advisable to start work with the preparation of the duralumin corners of the slider. Make holes in them for the M4 mounting bolts, after which, having fastened both corners with a clamp, you can start making holes for the guides. Since it is almost impossible to use a Ø 25-30 mm drill at home, I recommend using a 10 or 12 mm drill first, and then boring the resulting holes with a round file.

The next operation is the installation of guide tubes. They must be strictly vertical: failure to comply with this requirement can negate the effort expended, so I recommend sticking to the following sequence of work. First, drill a hole in the base for one of the tubes with any available drill and a knife, give it a conical shape, as shown in Figure 2a. Then insert the tube (the latter should fit into the bottom of the hole with an interference fit) and use a square to set it vertically. After that, fill the annular gap between the guide and the surface of the conical hole with epoxy glue. The diameter of the second socket should be 2-3 mm larger than the tube (see Figure 2b). Put the corners of the slider on the first guide and, using the latter as a jig, insert the second guide tube into the socket of the base. Fill the gap with glue and leave the entire structure in this position until the epoxy is completely cured.

To fix the drill, make a hole in the center of the slider panel. In addition, special sockets are needed on the slider for the upper and lower ends of the drill bed. You can make them in the following way. Put the epoxy putty in the marked places with a layer of 1,5-2 mm, cover it with pieces of plastic film and, when the putty hardens slightly, install a drill and press it against the slider panel. After the final curing of the putty, remove the polyethylene.

I attached two metal plates to the base of the machine - with their help it is easy to fix the workpiece.

The machine is ready. It remains only to glue four pieces of sponge rubber or foam rubber on the base board from below for greater stability and to prevent slipping.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Background music interferes with the creative process 26.02.2019

Researchers from the University of Central Lancashire, the University of Lancaster (UK) and the University of Gävle (Sweden) investigated how background music affects the quality of performance of tasks related to "linguistic creativity". They found that background music "significantly impairs" people's creative thinking levels.

An experiment helped scientists come to this conclusion. Its participants were shown three words: "dress", "dial", "flower" (dress, dial, flower) - and they had to find one word (in this case, "sun", sun), which can be combined with the three above to form a new word or phrase: "sundress", "sundial" and "sunflower" (sundress, sundial and sunflower).

During this task, different music played in the background. In the first case - a song with lyrics in a foreign language, in the second - instrumental music without words, in the third - a song in the native language.

Dr Neil McLatchie of Lancaster University said: "We have found compelling evidence that human performance is impaired when music is played in the background." It does not matter if there is text in it and in what language it is. The researchers suggest that this may be due to the fact that music impairs verbal working memory.

It is noteworthy that the participants in the experiment performed equally well when there was no extraneous noise in the background or when they were surrounded only by the noise of the library. This is because, psychologists say, library noise is a "steady state" of the environment that is not so destructive.
