The construction of ellipses is associated with certain difficulties, which is why when drawing axonometric images, this process takes the lion's share of time. The ellipsograph I invented allows you to quickly draw ellipses of various sizes and with any ratio of the major and minor semiaxes. If necessary, the tool can also be used as a regular compass for drawing circles.

The basis of the ellipsograph is a support leg with three support needles fixed on it, a guide disk and a drawing leg. The device is mounted on support needles, the ratio of the semiaxes is set by changing the angle of inclination of the guide disk, and the dimensions of the ellipse are set by the position of the disk on the support leg. It remains to turn the drawing leg 360 ° so that it touches the guide disk all the time, and the ellipse is built.

Now for the details. The drawing leg is mated with the support leg by means of a drum with a hinge. The drum itself is fixed with a locking split ring. A spring is provided to create a constant pressure of the drawing leg against the guide disc.

The guide disc is hinged on the support leg. You can change its angle relative to the vertical axis using the fixing screw on the disk. Adjustment of the position of the disk (in height) on the support leg is carried out by another screw of the hinge assembly.

The drawing leg of the ellipsograph is made floating - this is necessary to ensure constant contact of the stylus with the paper when running around the disk.

Converting the ellipsograph into a regular compass is simple - just set the guide disk perpendicular to the support leg.
