WONDERS OF NATURE
Pillars of Renon. Nature miracle Part of the Alps in northern Italy near the border with Austria is called Eastern. Here is one of the best European ski resorts. The name speaks for itself - Dolomites-super-ski (or, in English, super ski, that is, "the best skiing"). Here, a whole network of resorts, hotels and groomed trails is a single system, where everything is created for the convenience of skiers and snowboarders. The total length of the route exceeds 30 kilometers. The lifts are open until late at night. Many trails are lit.
Dolomites local mountains are named after the main sedimentary rock - dolomite. It perpetuates the name of the French explorer Deod de Dolomier. He was born in the XNUMXth century, was the son of a marquis and a member of the famous Order of Malta. Dolomier became interested in geology out of boredom when he was in prison. He got there for murder in a duel. Dolomier was lucky - his death sentence was commuted to imprisonment at the last moment. Science so fascinated the talented Frenchman that he soon became a member of the Paris Academy of Sciences. Dolomier climbed the Alps and wrote a scientific work on the origin of their constituent rocks. Together with Napoleon, Dolomier went to Egypt. After the collapse of this military expedition, he was again thrown into prison, where he wrote Reflections on Mineralogy on the pages of the only book available to him - the Bible. Let us return, however, to the Alps. Dolomite is a bit like limestone in texture and color. By the way, ground dolomite is sometimes sold to gardeners as a substitute for lime - to reduce the acidity of the soil. Having bought a bag of dolomite flour, you can safely say that you have acquired a piece of the Eastern Alps. However, not all of the Alps in northeastern Italy are composed of this breed. There are areas where clay deposits predominate. They were brought here by a giant glacier tongue during the last ice age. Sometimes these glacial deposits (geologists call them moraines) form amazing formations. Perhaps the most unusual of them are located west of the Super Ski Dolomites, east of the city of Bolzano. Here, on the plateau of Renona, on the edge of the small village of Longomoso, in the hollow of a rocky hill, huge figures rise, resembling knights errant wrapped in bright cloaks. It seems that a whole detachment of giants went on a campaign, and so it froze, not moving far from the edge of the mountain. The famous pillars of Renon are also reminiscent of oriental women - many have a large boulder resting on their "head", like a basket or a jug of water. Geologists explain the appearance of these formations as follows. The clay material brought by the glacier began to gradually collapse under the influence of precipitation. In the clay that the ice brought with it, there are huge stones. They, like giant umbrellas, cover the clay from rain and snow. As a result, the surrounding rock is destroyed faster than the one under the stone. So there is a clay, turned tip up, "icicle" with a stone cap at the top. Sooner or later the stone will slide down. Then the top of the pillar begins to collapse faster - until a new boulder-defender appears from its depths. It is clear that over time, all Renon pillars should disappear. However, their complete destruction should take at least several tens of thousands of years. So you still have time to personally look at these amazing formations of nature. Author: Afonkin S.Yu.
