Tourist bag. Travel Tips
Travel bag means "necessary" in French. Usually this is a set of accessories for something in a special case. Everyone knows toilet bags for manicure, drawing (preparation), travel, which contain tableware or toiletries. A tourist will be more satisfied with a self-made travel bag, since it can be equipped according to individual needs, made lighter, more compact, taking into account the peculiarities of camping life. These features are such that a tourist quite often leaves a backpack: in a storage room, with people who sheltered him for a while, or even just by the path in order to visit an interesting natural object lightly. But there are things that you don’t want to leave in your backpack and that you should always have with you. They should be in the toilet bag. With him, by the way, you can go on business trips without things at all - soap and towels are given in hotels, and the rest of the essentials are in it. Travel bag simplifies camping fees, frees the backpack from many small things. It favorably differs from the hand bag familiar to many in that it does not take up hands and does not interfere with walking, its contents are ordered, stacked more compactly, and less damaged. It is also useful that it can be hidden in a pocket or under clothing on a neck lace; and if it is open, then its contents are shown to prying eyes not completely, but partially. The toilet bag looks like a notepad with dimensions of 134x204 mm and a thickness of 15 - 20 mm. It may contain: a passport, tickets, money in several large denominations, a notebook, a pencil, a ruler, an overview map (a sheet from a small atlas), a detailed map of the hiking area, vacation certificates, vaccinations, a toothbrush, a comb, a mirror, a saw-knife , shaving and repair kits, first aid kit, compass, matches. A lot can be accommodated in a small amount, and although consumables (threads, matches, first aid kit) are contained in a very limited amount, experience shows that they are enough for several trips (and therefore years), since in essence all this is an emergency supply. It is not consumed, but stored for the case when even one match can mean a lot.
The construction of the toilet bag is as follows. A piece of leather of the finest dressing and hard tanning was taken as the basis (cover). To do this, I bought and ripped open a good wallet. Plastics should be avoided as they cannot be stitched and break in the cold. On the left inner side of the cover there is a pocket for a passport, a mirror and papers, on top of which pockets for a ruler, comb and knife are pre-sewn in such a way that objects do not fall out of them. The remaining cells are made according to the drawing, and already according to them - the items stored there. The pockets are made of bologna type fabric, as it is thin and durable, does not fray, does not stretch, does not rot. The skin here is undesirable because of the large thickness. Remember: an empty leather wallet is about 15 mm thick, which is unacceptable for us. I took the fabric white, the color of the paper. I wanted the travel bag to look like a notebook, not a wallet. To the right cover, from the inside, I sewed two flaps with hooks and a piece of fabric - a cover on which strips of leather - jumpers were sewn in advance, and caps were placed under the hooks. I first stitched the edge of the cover to the edge of the cover, then alternately - from the edge to the center - jumpers that form through cells. Through because there is no convenient way to machine filing the bottoms. However, the items stored there do not fall out anyway. For the rigidity of the cells, the extreme strips of leather are impregnated with waterproof glue before sewing. In the same way, the other two, non-sewn sides of the lid are strengthened.
In the place of the fold of the cover of the travel bag, there are caps for the neck lace, and next to them a strip of leather or fabric is sewn - a binding, to one edge of which a plate of white celluloid is glued, and a notebook is sewn to the other. Now about the contents of the toilet bag. Mirror - a piece of a plate of photogloss, polished titanium 0,5 mm thick or an ordinary mirror. For all, the rule is the same: the less, the more whole, since metal bends, and glass breaks. Ruler for measurements on the map. If it is metal, then stainless steel. A plate for short-term (washable) recordings, polished with fine sandpaper - a pencil writes poorly on glossy celluloid. Notepad - ten sheets of thin non-soaking paper. Toothbrush - children's or adult, but cut to the length of the cell, where it is stored with a first-aid kit test tube and a pencil. Knife - a piece of a hacksaw blade made of high-speed steel, in which the teeth are not ground off. Such a knife can cut and saw not only products, but also wood, as well as metals: tin, steel ropes, rods; handle ends - use as a screwdriver. The handle is made of adhesive tape, with the expectation that it can be used for its intended purpose. Its length is 60, thickness - 4 mm. Not very convenient, but compactness is preferred. If necessary, the adhesive plaster winding can be lengthened and thickened by placing a handkerchief or bandage. A sheath made of tin or several layers of paper is enclosed in the pocket under the knife. A shaving set consisting of a plastic (for lightness) safety razor handle and several stainless steel blades. It is also possible that the set contains a shaving brush made of a flat artistic brush 25 mm wide, which has a piece of chain instead of a shaft. The repair kit includes a reel with thread, a set of pins, sewing needles and small tools contained in the hollow handle of a razor. The pen is a metal tube with a cork at one end and a metal cap at the other. At the end of the plug there is a blind hole with a thread for a razor, and on the side there is a hole for a locking screw, with which an awl, screwdriver, drills (knife handle) can be clamped in the threadless, deep part of the hole. Screw and tools are stored in the handle. The first aid kit includes a test tube and a tray. A test tube is a thin-walled tube, soldered, for example, from tin, one end of which is plugged and the other is closed with a rubber stopper. A foil tray 0,5 mm thick is attached to the last wire axis, on which tablets are placed wrapped in tracing paper with the name of the drug. With a tin tray, it is convenient to extract the contents of the rest of the first-aid kit from the cell. It is for everyone. For example, I have a microampule with potassium permanganate, a skein of adhesive plaster, a lump of cotton wool on my tray, and streptocide and tetracycline tablets in a test tube. I know from experience: most often a first-aid kit is needed to treat minor injuries. In such cases, I scraped a streptocide tablet on the mirror with a knife, poured the powder on the wound and wrapped it with a band-aid. Compass - a rectangular box made of plexiglass, inside of which a magnetic needle is installed on the needle and a ± 20 ° scale is applied. Such a scale is quite enough to orient the map taking into account the magnetic declination (on the territory of the Russian Federation it does not exceed 20°). Those who need a compass only to determine the cardinal points do not need a scale. Matches are stored in their cell in a sealed box made of tin. One end of the box is sealed, the other is closed with a rubber stopper with two recesses of the drawer cushion attached with a wire axis. For better sealing, the cork has slightly convex edges and is fully inserted into the box. So that it can be removed, it has holes for nails (like on the blade of a folding knife). In a box measuring 12x25x60 mm, at least 40 matches fit, provided they are neatly stacked. It's good, for example, to put them in a "jack" on a sticky paper tape, and the last one - like an accordion - in a box. This is useful: unglued matches tend to fall out of a cramped box when fingers are put into it, or get mixed up. As a result, having withdrawn a couple of matches, the owner may be surprised to find that the remaining ones no longer fit in the box, and closing it by force, crush half of the heads. “I carry everything with me,” a person with a travel bag can say.
