Let's list some common edible fruits.

Many fruits are familiar from ordinary garden species. With the advent of summer, they become an important source of food.

1. Barberry

A shrub growing in swampy areas. The height of the plant reaches 3 m. The leaves are oval, the flowers are yellow. The thorns grow on the stem in groups of three. Very acidic bright red berries are rich in vitamin C.

2. Rosehip

Grows in the temperate zone. It resembles a wide spreading pale garden rose. Flowers are white or pink. Seed pods (rose hips) are rich in vitamin C. When chewed, they give juice, and when cooked, crushed fruits produce syrup.

3. Blackberry and raspberry

Shrub growing in forests in open glades. The leaves are serrated, the flowers are white, sometimes pinkish. The berries are juicy, segmented, and when ripe, change color from green to red and purple-black in late summer. Raspberry bushes grow less. The berries ripen in early summer and turn red. They are eaten raw.

4. Wild strawberry

It grows in forests in dry grassy areas. Small, clinging plant. The berries (hidden under the leaves) look like small garden strawberries and are consumed fresh.

5. Hawthorn

A thorny shrub or small tree growing on uncultivated land. The leaves have a pronounced lobed shape. White or yellow flowers form inflorescences. Red berries have creamy flesh. They are eaten raw. Young spring shoots are also edible.

6. Wild apple tree

Low thorny trees grow in forests and in areas overgrown with shrubs. The leaves are oval, serrated, hairy. Twigs are reddish-brown. Flowers are white, pink or red. The fruits look like garden apples, but have a bitter and sour taste. Their excessive use causes diarrhea. It is best to cook wild apples with other fruits.

7. Wild cherry

Grows in wooded areas. The height of the tree reaches 24 m. The color of small leaves can vary from pale green to red. The bark is shiny, red-brown. Flowers are white or pinkish. The fruits are colored red or black. Some varieties have a sour taste.

8. Blackthorn or prickly plum

It grows on the territory of the Eurasian continent in forest areas and in areas overgrown with shrubs. The height of the bush reaches 4 m. Dark brown branches are dotted with long thorns. The leaves are oval. The flowers are white. Small black and blue fruits have a very sour taste, are eaten in the form of jelly.

To make jelly, the fruits should be boiled and kept on low heat until they become quite soft. Let the jelly cool and then transfer it to a tightly sealed container. Other fruits rich in pectin, such as wild apples, can be added to fruits with a low pectin content.

9. Juniper

Grows in mountainous and northern regions. The height of the plant, which is a tall or low creeping shrub, can reach 5 m. The leaves are gray-green, needle-like. Do not eat young green berries. Ripe black and blue fruits should be boiled with other food.

10. Rowan

Grows in forests and mountainous areas. A tree with a smooth grayish bark reaches a height of 15 m. The leaves are small, serrated. The flowers are white. Small orange berries form clusters. When raw, they have a spicy taste. It is best to make jelly from rowan.

11. Wild mulberry

Grows in forests. The height of the tree reaches 6-20 m. The leaves are oval, sometimes have a pronounced lobed shape. Red or black fruits in the form of earrings are similar to 5-7 cm blackberries. They are eaten raw.

12. Wild grapes

Widely distributed in warm climates. Spreading, high climbing plant. The large, heart-shaped leaves are cut with large denticles along the edges. Flowers are greenish. The color of the berries varies from amber to purple. Fresh berries and young boiled leaves are eaten.

Some fruits can be dried for long term storage. Lay them in a single layer on a piece of cloth in a place out of direct sunlight and protected from moisture (rain or dew). The drying process lasts 10 days.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Gut bacteria can affect mood 19.02.2019

A study by Belgian scientists has shown that many intestinal bacteria can produce substances that affect nerve cell function and possibly mood.

Previously, several studies in mice have shown that gut microbes can influence animal behavior, and small human studies have shown that microbial composition in the gut changes with depression. To test the strength of the link between the human microbiome and mental health, Jeroen Raes, a microbiologist at KU Leuven (Belgium), and his colleagues studied a large group of people to assess a "normal" microbiome.

A total of 1054 Belgians participated in the study. Some of them - 173 people - were diagnosed with depression or scored poorly on quality of life tests. The team compared the state of the gut flora of participants with depression and the rest of the subjects. It turned out that in people with depression, the level of microbes such as Coprococcus and Dialister remained low in people's microbiomes. It didn't matter if people were taking antidepressants or not. Conversely, participants who claimed to have a high psychological quality of life had high levels of these microbes.

The team then looked at the medical test results of another group, which included 1064 Dutch people. The researchers found that the same two types of bacteria were absent from the microbiomes of those people who were depressed, as well as seven participants suffering from severe clinical depression. Scientists admit that the data do not currently support a causal relationship. Perhaps the effect even works the other way around: it’s not microbes that affect our mood, but our mental health affects the state of the microbiome.

However, in subsequent experiments, the researchers found evidence that microbes can communicate with our nervous system by producing neurotransmitters that are responsible for transmitting electrochemical impulses to nerve cells. Scientists have found, for example, that Coprococcus appears to have a pathway associated with dopamine, a key brain signal that is responsible for feelings of satisfaction.

The discovery could lead to new probiotic treatments for depression that could help increase levels of essential microbes in the human gut. However, many more studies need to be done to confirm that microbial compounds produced in the gut can affect our brain.
