TOURIST ADVICE
Movement on thin ice. Travel Tips Как move on ice? No ice - no problem. As soon as the rivers rise, a good road immediately appears, but you have to pay for it, sometimes very expensive, especially in spring. To prevent this from happening, remember the following plate, showing what kind of ice can withstand you.
The given data are typical for strong winter ice; in spring and autumn, the permissible safe ice thickness should be increased one and a half (1,5) times. When organizing a permanent crossing or crossing by car, it is necessary to measure the thickness of the ice along the entire route. To do this, holes are punched on both sides of the crossing, in which this same thickness is measured. Hollowing holes closer than 5-10 meters from one another does not make sense. When measuring the thickness of the ice, keep an eye on whether it decreases or, on the contrary, increases in order to thicken the network as it decreases. When measuring the thickness of the ice, remove all of the top loose layer of snow and ice. Strong ice is transparent and without air bubbles. For pedestrians, there is a simple and proven way to measure the strength of ice - this is to try to break through it with an ice pick as you move. If the ice breaks through with one blow, it is necessary to turn back, while the first steps must be taken without lifting the soles from the ice. In general, the “old man’s” shuffling gait is the most suitable for crossing the ice. Firstly, there is less chance of slipping, and secondly, the load is distributed more evenly. If the ice takes a hit, calmly walk forward a couple more meters. Just remember, you need to poke with a pawn 0.5-1 m in front of you, and not under your feet. And, of course, in no case should you test the strength of the ice by kicking or jumping. 100%, you will know that the ice is thin already having fallen headlong. It is safer to cross a river or lake on skis or snowshoes. Although this deceptive security makes some people completely forget about reasonable caution, which always ends badly. Having fallen through the ice in skis and with a backpack over your shoulders, it is almost impossible to get out. Therefore, release the ski bindings, hold the poles in your hands without threading them into the loops, hang the backpack on one shoulder, or drag it on a rope. If you are walking in a group, keep a distance of at least 5 meters. Try to use the already laid ski track. Most often, troubles with ice occur during the period of ice fishing. Especially in spring, when the ice is thin, and the sun is so pleasantly hot, that it would seem that this is not the best time for winter fishing. So it certainly is, but it’s not worth punching many holes nearby, gathering in large groups in one place, punching holes at crossings, fishing at gullies and have a good thick rope 15 meters long with you. Always, in any place, at any time, going out on the ice, first look around, even if you use this crossing every day. You can predict in advance where the ice is less strong and bypass these places. Most often, the ice is the least solid near the shore, especially near bushes, reeds, under snowdrifts. The ice in these places can be fractured, there can be air underneath. Stay away from places where streams flow, runoff from farms or factories. Under a thick layer of snow, the ice is always thinner. If you know for sure where the keys exit, bypass them. On the bends of the arm, keep the inside. If the tips above didn't help and you still failed, then read on. Having failed, you need to spread your arms wide along the edges of the ice and refrain from diving headlong. You have to get out in the direction you came from. Try to get onto the ice without breaking the edge of the ice, without sudden movements, crawling with your chest and alternately pulling your legs to the surface. Remember, the larger the contact surface of your body with ice, the less likely it is to fail again. Therefore, you need to literally spread over it. Having got out of the polynya, do not try to immediately get up on your feet, first roll back, and then crawl back to where you came from. After a few meters, you can get up to calculate the loss from a local natural disaster and carefully move towards the shore. Only with fear of freezing you don’t have to run and stomp your feet, otherwise you will fail again. Once on the shore, make a decision either to run to the nearest warm place, or to dry on the spot. If the frost is severe, then it is dangerous to take off and squeeze out clothes, it can freeze and then you won’t put them on. Try to build a large fire and dry off with it. If not you, but your fellow traveler, failed, you can approach the polynya only by crawling, spreading your arms wide. You can put some kind of pole, board, skis under you and crawl, leaning on them. Two or three meters before the hole, throw a rescue line to a friend. They can be tied belts, scarves, the same short fur coat or pole. As soon as he grabs him, start crawling to pull him to the shore.
