How to identify river width?

We choose some noticeable object on the opposite bank, for example, a boat. We stand against it and at a right angle to this direction, along the coast, we count a certain number of steps, for example 50; we put the stick, then in the same direction we again count half the number of steps (in our example 25) and from this place we go at a right angle from the shore until we are on the same line with the stick and the boat.

Double the number of steps from the bank to our stop at the target, i.e. 30x2=60 steps, is the width of the river.

If after installing the stick, as before installing it, we counted 50 steps, then the distance from the bank to the target is equal to the width of the river.

A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. Curious studies of the sense of smell in humans were conducted by Jess Porter, a graduate student at the University of Berkeley (USA).

She asked 32 undergraduate students to follow a 10-meter zigzag path with a chocolate-scented liquid on the grass of a lawn using their sense of smell. To ensure that the experimental subjects were not distracted by anything, they were blindfolded and their ears were plugged, leaving only the sense of smell. It turned out that two-thirds of the students, moving their noses from side to side, are able to complete the route in XNUMX minutes. After choosing four test subjects, they began to train them on the same exercise three times a day.

It turned out that the results are significantly improved with training. The possibility of "stereoscopic" sense of smell in humans (it is known in rats) was studied on 14 volunteers. With one nostril plugged, only a third made it to the end of the trail, and they did it 26% slower than with two nostrils.

The general conclusion: of course, the human sense of smell lags behind the canine, but it is much better than it is commonly thought, and lends itself to development.
