After converting to kilometers and dividing by 1000, the formula becomes

that is, the distance in kilometers to a person is equal to one divided by the number of millimeters counted along the ruler on an outstretched arm (at a distance of 60 cm).

Example. If a person closes with a match 2 mm thick, then the distance to him is 0,5 km, or 500 m, and if with a thin round pencil 4 mm thick, then D \u1d 4/250 mm \uXNUMXd XNUMX m.

To make it easier to measure distances in this way prof. F. G. De Lionde proposed to use a handy device made of an aluminum plate with stepped cutouts, the dimensions of which correspond to the apparent size of a person of average height, located at different distances from the observer.

For example. Pointing a plate at a person in an outstretched hand, we establish that the figure completely fills the fourth cutout on the left of the plate with the inscription "125". This means that the distance from the observer to the object is 125 m.

Measuring distances by the angular magnitude of objects using improvised devices practically does not depend on the terrain, lighting and coloring of objects. The errors of such measurements are more constant and after training and acquiring the appropriate skill should not exceed 10%.
