We honor everyone as zeros, and ourselves as ones

Pushkin A.S.
Pushkin A.S.

Phraseologism: We honor everyone as zeros, and ourselves as ones.

Meaning: About someone's inflated self-conceit, about a dismissive attitude towards others.

Origin: From the novel in verse "Eugene Onegin" (1823-1831) by A. S. Pushkin (1799-1837), ch. 2, stanza 14.

Random phraseology:

Bird's milk.

Meaning:

Something unheard of, impossible, the ultimate desire.

Origin:

There are several versions of the origin of the phraseological unit: 1) from ancient Greek sources. As a proverb meaning something rare and precious, this expression ("gala orniton") is given by Aristophanes, Atheneus, Strabo, Lucian and others, 2) the expression bird's milk has grown into Russian folklore, becoming in it a folk symbol of fabulous abundance. This is an international turnover known to the Slavs, Greeks, Spaniards, Tatars, Hungarians and many others. This expression was also widespread in the ancient world: among the Romans, chicken milk was a symbol of prosperity, and in the comedy of Aristophanes (c. 466-385 BC) "Birds" heroes boast that they have more than enough bird's milk. A long life in Russian folklore and folk speech has left purely national marks on this ancient expression. It, in particular, has acquired a reproachful character: he only lacks bird's milk "he has everything, but he still complains about something." Prove that the circulation of bird's milk in some from modern languages - borrowing from another is almost impossible. This is an ancient universal, 3) the French say: "il est nourri de lait de poule", based on the prejudices of the ancients that chickens can give milk, 4) the expression goes back to the Proto-Slavic foundation.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Everyone has their own reality 26.02.2021

A new experiment in the field of quantum physics has demonstrated a startling idea that was previously expressed only in the framework of the theory. It turned out that under the right conditions, two people can observe the same event with different results - and both will be right.

According to a study published on ArXiv, physicists at Heriot-Watt University have demonstrated for the first time how two people can experience a "different reality" by recreating a classic speculative experiment from quantum physics in practice.

The experiment involves two people who observe the same photon - the smallest quantitative unit of light, which under different conditions can exhibit the properties of both a wave and a particle. A photon can exist in one of these two states, but before anyone can measure it, it is in a so-called "superposition" - that is, both conditions are met at the same time.

In a thought experiment, one scientist calmly analyzes a photon and determines its position. The other, unaware of the first scientist's measurement, is able to confirm that the photon (and hence the first scientist's measurement) still exists in a quantum superposition of all possible outcomes.

As a result, each scientist is in his own reality. Moreover, technically both are right even if they do not agree with each other.

To bring this theory to life, an experimental laser setup with a beam splitting system and a series of 6 photons were needed, which were measured by various devices that replaced two scientists.
