Many when walking do so the same Stepsthat they can serve as a unit for measuring distances.

If you accustom yourself to count not individual steps, but after two steps to the third, counting alternately under the right and left legs, then the distance traveled is simply translated into meters. Some consider steps not in triplets, but in pairs. With constant practice, you can get used to counting the steps in your mind almost mechanically.

After every hundred triplets of steps, counting is started again due to the difficulty of repeating large three-digit numbers. To facilitate the memorization of the hundreds of triples of steps passed, they resort to successive bending of the fingers, shifting matches from one pocket to another, marks on paper or other means.

To obtain the most accurate distance measurement results, you need to check the length of your step, find out the so-called step price. It is better to check on a highway with kilometer posts. The distance between them is passed several times and the average step value is displayed. Let, for example, on 1000 m the average number of steps turned out to be equal to 450 triplets. Then 1000/450 \u20d 9/9. Every 20 triplets of steps are counted as 100 m, i.e., approximately 222 m are contained in XNUMX triplets of steps.

Usually, the step length is equal to half the human height, counting to the level of the eyes, i.e., an average of 0,7-0,8 m.

The accuracy of measuring distances in steps depends both on the nature of the terrain and on the experience of the observer. On flat terrain, the steps are almost the same.

On average, it can be assumed that the error in measuring the distance in steps is about 0,02 of the distance traveled. At the same time, one should try to take even steps, not deviate from the intended direction and not stagnate.
