The lowest pressure in the world (870 hPa) was recorded 482 km west of the island of Guam, Pacific Ocean, at 16 44 north latitude. and 137 46 east October 12, 1979

During Hurricane Jimber in the Pacific Ocean on September 12, 1988, an atmospheric pressure (at sea level) of 645 mm Hg was recorded. (or 860 mb.)

Lowest temperature (-143°C) was recorded at an altitude of 80,5-96,5 km during night observation of clouds over Kronogard, Sweden, from July 27 to August 7, 1963.

cloud height

Cirrus clouds are usually found at an altitude of 8250 m and above. However, the height of rare noctilucent clouds reaches 240000 m. Cirrus clouds at an altitude of 8075 m contain unfrozen supercooled water, the temperature of which is -35°C.

The lowest are stratus clouds - their height is 1066 m and below. The thickest clouds are tropical rain clouds with a vertical front thickness of up to 20000 m.

The windiest place

The Commonwealth Sea off the coast of George V in Antarctica is the windiest place in the world, with wind speeds of up to 320 km/h.

The strongest wind on earth

A wind speed of 371 km/h was recorded on Mount Washington (1916m above sea level), New Hampshire, USA on April 12, 1934. The record wind speed (333 km/h) on the plain (44 m above sea level) was recorded March 8, 1972 at Tula Air Force Base, Greenland.

The highest wind speed in a tornado (459 km / h) was registered in Wichita Falls, Texas, USA on April 2, 1958.

The most destructive cyclone

On November 12, 1970, winds reaching speeds of 240 km/h and a tidal wave 15 m high hit the coast, the Ganges delta and the offshore islands of Bhoda, Khatia, Kukri-Mukri, Manpura and Rabnabad (East Pakistan, now Bangladesh), in As a result, between 300000 and 500000 people died.

Most tornado casualties

On April 26, 1989, a tornado hit the city of Shaturia, Bangladesh. Approximately 1300 people lost their lives, more than 50000 were left homeless.

Maximum property damage caused by a tornado

The giant whirlwinds that hit the states of Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, USA, in April 1985, killed 271 people, injured several thousand more, and caused more than $400 million in damage.

Largest number of people left homeless by a typhoon

Typhoon Ike, in which the wind speed reached 220 km / h, flew into the Philippines on September 2, 1985. 1363 people were killed, another 300 were injured, and 1.12 million people were left homeless.

Highest death toll from a typhoon

About 10000 people died on September 18, 1906, when a devastating typhoon with wind speeds of 161 km/h hit Hong Kong.

The most tragic consequences of the monsoon

The monsoon that ravaged Thailand in 1983 killed about 10000 people and caused $396 million in damage. After that, almost 100000 contracted monsoon-borne diseases and about 15000 people had to be evacuated.

Waterspout

The highest waterspout, information about which is reliable, was observed on May 16, 1898 near Eden, New South Wales, Australia. With the help of a theodolite, its height was determined - 1528m. Its diameter was 3 m.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Dry cargo ship for special forces 02.08.2016

Bulk carriers are vessels intended for the carriage of solid, bulk and packaged cargoes. A modern special forces fighter may well be classified as a "packaged" cargo, given his equipment from body armor, more precisely, now an armored suit, helmet, night vision device, exoskeleton, etc. - containers, in a word. Therefore, it is appropriate to call a dry cargo ship a new special forces maritime vehicle called Dry Combat Submersible - "Dry Combat Submarine".

"Dry" mini-submarines differ from "wet" ones in that in the latter, the fighters are located outside the boat, i.e. in the water, and use, in addition to their own air tanks, compressed air from the submarine. Dry mini-submarines carrying fighters inside were supposed to enter service with the US Navy SEALs in 2003, but only one of the planned six was made, and then the contract with Northrop Grumman was terminated due to shortcomings. Now, another giant of the military-industrial complex, Lockheed Martin, has received a $166 million government order from the US Special Forces command to replace existing "wet" mini-submarines.

The contract provides for the construction of three "dry" submarines. In accordance with the Pentagon's goal of cost savings through the use of existing solutions, Lockheed Martin designers took as a basis the commercial model S302 9,36 m long, 2,34 m wide and 2,34 m high. The new submarine will accommodate two pilots and six fighters. The maximum diving depth is 100 m, the depth of the exit of the fighters from the boat is 30 m, the maximum speed is 5 knots. According to Lockheed Martin, the new vehicle will have improved hydrodynamics and chassis.
