A lot of invention and ingenuity is shown by lovers of water sports. For example, a paddle for a swimmer accelerates gliding through the water by 2-3 times.

There are many designs of oars for a swimmer. We present one of the simplest. A wooden rod about 1,5-2 meters long. Along the edges of the blade blades made of plank or plywood impregnated with waterproof glue. In the very center of the rod is a drum. It is also made of plywood or fabric on a frame, covered with plastic or impregnated with a waterproof compound.

The hollow drum in the center is the float. The oar can float, and it is enough for the bather to take his hands on the right and left of the drum to test the power of the stroke.

With the help of such an oar, athletes swam the English Channel much faster than the most famous masters of fast gliding through the water could.

Why don't you get a paddle like this? Your friends will be very grateful to you, and you yourself will get great pleasure.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Forgetfulness can depend on the time of day 15.12.2021

Every time you can't remember something, there are two main reasons - either you didn't put enough effort into remembering the information (for example, the name of the person you were introduced to a minute ago), or the information is stored in your brain , but at that moment you cannot get it (as it happens, for example, with the words of your favorite song that you somehow forgot).

Many scientists are studying how memories are formed. The biology of forgetting is difficult to study, because it is very difficult to distinguish between two phenomena: when you know something, but at a certain moment you cannot remember, and when you really forgot it, that is, the information was erased from your brain.

For the study, a team of scientists from Satoshi Kida University of Tokyo chose young male and female mice. In the learning phase, the scientists asked the mice to explore a new object for a minute. In the next phase, the scientists observed how long they touched the object when it was shown to them again. If the mice had already seen the object, they needed less time to contact it. Scientists were interested in how long the mice would touch the object at different times of the day.

The scientists conducted this experiment with healthy mice and mice without the BMAL1 protein, which regulates the expression of a number of genes. It is known that BMAL1 is regulated by circadian rhythms - its concentration is lowest before awakening and highest before falling asleep.

Specialists used the so-called Zeitgeber - the body's natural biological clock. The sleep of the mice fell on the Zeitgeber time from 1 to 12, and vigor - from 12 to 24. The "learning" phase was carried out according to the Zeitgeber time 10, and the recall - at the time 4. It turned out that the mice that were "trained" just before how they normally woke up, and tested after they went to bed, recognized the object. However, mice that were "trained" at the same time but tested 24 hours later no longer recognized it.

Healthy mice and mice without BMAL1 showed similar results, however mice without BMAL1 were especially forgetful before waking up by Zeitgeber time. From the study, the scientists concluded that mice do not recognize an object that they have seen and know exactly before, if they are awakened from sleep just on the eve of their natural awakening.

Interpretation of the results of the study links BMAL1 to the activation of dopamine receptors and other signaling molecules in the hippocampus, an area of the brain that is responsible, in part, for the formation of memories.
