The photoelectric effect was discovered by Heinrich Hertz in 1887. The photoelectric effect is the redistribution of electrons over energy levels when photons of electromagnetic radiation (in particular light) are absorbed by a solid body. Distinguish between external and internal photoelectric effect.

The external photoelectric effect consists in the fact that when photons are absorbed, the electrons of a solid body go out into the environment (photoelectron emission).

Laws of the external photoelectric effect:

1. The minimum energy of an electron at which it can escape into the environment hν0 is called the red boundary of the photoelectric effect.

2. The kinetic energy of the emitted electron increases with the energy of the absorbed photon U=hν−hν0 (Einstein's law).

3. The number of emitted electrons is directly proportional to the radiation intensity (Stoletov's law).

Internal photoelectric effect - the occurrence of photoconductivity (in photoresistors) and the occurrence of EMF when light is absorbed (solar cells).

The effect of photoconductivity (photogalvanic effect) was investigated by Stoletov (1888) and F. Lenard (1899).

The effect of the occurrence of photo-EMF (photodielectric effect) was substantiated by A. Einstein in 1905.

Latest news of science and technology, new electronics:

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Translucent novelty 18.01.2012

Epson's Moverio video glasses are not the first device of this type on the market, but they have an important feature - translucent displays, thanks to which the user can see everything that is happening around him.

With a diagonal of 0,52 inches, the display resolution is 950x540 pixels. This allows you to create the feeling that you are looking at an 80-inch screen from a distance of five meters. Video can be played in both 2D and 3D. The glasses run Android OS, are equipped with a WiFi adapter, a micro-USB interface and headphones with Dolby Mobile technology support.

The Moverio weighs 240 g without the remote control. In Japan, the device can be purchased for about 60 yen ($000).
