Microbes identify toxins

29.05.2012

Scientists from Tel Aviv University have developed a toxin sensor based on genetically modified bacteria. A small sensor called the Dip Chip is designed to warn the user of general toxicity, that is, it "tells" the presence of any toxic materials that are dangerous to a living organism.

Artificial toxins easily contaminate food and drinking water. In ancient times, human tasters were used to detect poisoned food. Today, there are more humane methods, including, for example, special fish that monitor the safety of drinking water, or special biosensors. But despite advances in toxin detection, modern electronic equipment is too complicated to use, expensive, rather bulky, and usually narrowly functional.

The Dip Chip contains microbes that react biologically to various toxic chemicals, mimicking the biological responses of humans and animals. The device was created on the basis of genetically modified microorganisms developed in the laboratory of Professor Belkin. When modified microbes are exposed to toxic or poisonous substances, they produce measurable biochemical reactions that are converted into electrical signals.

The Dip Chip Detector is very easy to use as it gives only two types of signals: "toxic" or "non-toxic". At the same time, the number of false positives, according to the developers, is very small. The main advantage of the Dip Chip is its ability to define toxicity as a biological quality. In other words, microbes determine the danger of a sample for the life of a living organism, and do not detect specific toxic substances (possibly not dangerous in small concentrations), as all other sensors do. Many excellent detectors already exist for identifying specific toxic substances, but quickly determining whether water is drinkable, for example, is much easier with devices like the Dip Chip.

Currently, Israeli scientists are working on improving their invention. They are going to create compact versions of the Dip Chip, suitable for installation in mobile phones and tablet computers, which will be useful to the military and tourists. Such electronics, equipped with a Dip Chip, can quickly determine whether a particular product can be eaten.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Global warming is causing coral bleaching 06.12.2023

Changing ocean temperatures caused by global warming are becoming a key cause of coral bleaching around the world, warns the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This process, in which corals lose their colorful algae and turn white, has been seen from the Great Barrier Reef in Australia to the waters of Florida.

Scientists warn that corals need extended periods of cool water to successfully recover from bleaching. In light of this problem, research is being conducted and measures are being taken to maintain the health of reefs, such as limiting anchorage and controlling invasive species. All this underscores the urgency of taking action to curb climate change and preserve the unique ecosystems of the oceans.

Derek Manzello, director of Coral Reef Watch, emphasizes that coral bleaching has already been recorded in 35 countries and territories around five oceans and seas. Experts fear that if water temperatures do not drop, similar processes could affect all of the world's coral reefs by 2040. Recovery of corals after bleaching requires long periods of cool water, and without this, their chances of recovery are reduced.

Recent record temperatures have impacted the coral reef, although not to the same extent as in some other regions. However, even the Gulf of Mexico is not immune to climate change, with researchers raising concerns about overheating and threats to corals.

Although Flower Garden Banks appears less susceptible to bleaching for now, scientists are actively looking for ways to keep the reefs healthy. One of the measures is a ban on anchoring directly on reefs, replaced by the use of special floating cables for attaching to boats. Other efforts are aimed at controlling invasive fish species and organisms in the reef zone.
