We are so accustomed to the rowing boat that hardly anyone had a desire to improve it. And yet there were inquisitive ones. For example, the Greek sponge diver G. Dimos. Of course, having critically assessed its mechanism, many will find in it a weak study of individual nodes. But who knows, maybe such an engine will someday get the right to exist if other inventors join in its improvement?

What is the invention of Dimos? This is a pedal drive. Sitting in the boat, the rower rests on the pedals with his feet and, pressing either the right or the left through the rods and connecting rods, rotates the wheel. It is paired with a flywheel, which allows you to maintain a constant speed. Further, the belt drive transmits rotation to the input shaft of the gearbox and to the propeller.

Are there any advantages to such a mover in comparison with the oar? In our opinion, there is. And as many as three. The first and, perhaps, the most significant - the rower in the boat sits facing the direction of travel. And it is very convenient for management. Another benefit - the speed of the boat on the pedals will undoubtedly be higher. After all, the force created by the legs is noticeably greater. Due to the overdrive, the propeller speed can be achieved at 200-300 min-1. This is quite enough for the boat to move at a speed of 15 km / h. And finally, the last - the hands of the rower are free. And this is not so bad, especially when fishing or hunting.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide a detailed design development. After all, the invention itself does not require this. But even such a brief description and plus drawings will help craftsmen to take it into service.

Wings compound and folded 27.01.2016

Not so long ago, Boeing announced the completion of an important stage in preparation for the production of the future flagship of the Boeing family of passenger aircraft, the Boeing 777X model. The development of the so-called. "hard configuration" including the basic design and main features, as well as wind tunnel testing and structural load analysis. Detailed development of components, assemblies and other aircraft systems is next in line, after which it will be possible to launch the 777X into production.

One of the aircraft's most notable innovations will be 3,5m long wingtips that will fold vertically when taxiing and in the parking lot and deploy in flight. This will increase the working wingspan to 71,8, but at the same time retain the ability to use the existing runways and terminals, since the folded wingspan will be 64,8 m.

The company has not yet said how the rising wingtips will securely attach to the wing, although abnormal operation of the wingtips in flight could lead to disaster. Yes, and wings of this size, made of composite materials, should be able to withstand the usual load. However, Boeing has no doubts about the capabilities of the new aircraft, since structural tests carried out on the 787 showed that wings made of such materials can buckle above the tail and not break within 20 seconds.

With the new wings, the Boeing 777X promises to be the world's most fuel-efficient twin-engine airliner (in addition to being the largest). The variable wing shape will reduce fuel consumption by 12% and operating costs by 10%. This circumstance allowed the company to receive preliminary orders for 320 aircraft from six operators. Production is due to start in 2017, with the first aircraft entering service in 2020.
