CHILDREN'S SCIENTIFIC LABORATORY
We make it cold. Children's Science Lab Directory / Children's Science Lab Summer, along with joy, sometimes brings sorrow. Dust, heat, and if there is no wind, then it’s really bad. So what, lie down in the shade under a tree and wait until the evening comes? Of course not. An active person will find a way to get rid of the heat. One of these methods - the construction of a home-made air conditioner (air cooler) is recommended by Moscow engineer V. Korolev. Air conditioning Air conditioners are mainly of two types: compressor and evaporative. It is difficult to make a compressor one on your own: it is very complicated and expensive. Evaporative is much simpler, and anyone can do it - there would only be a desire, or rather, an unwillingness to endure the heat in your home or in the cab of a car. The principle of its work is based on the known law of physics. Evaporation requires heat; evaporating water picks it up from the surrounding air. Two designs that you can make with your own hands are shown in the figures. The first installation (Fig. 1) is quite simple. To assemble it, you need to have an old automotive-type inertia-oil air cleaner and a centrifugal fan with a 200 W electric motor. (Flange connection can be replaced by flexible hose with clamps or cap screws.)
If you only have a fan, make your own evaporator housing. It is not necessary to repeat the complex forms of an air cleaner made in the factory, they should be simplified as much as possible. The filter element is made of a fine mesh, rolled up in several layers into a cylinder of a given diameter (250-300 mm). At the bottom, the mesh is soldered to the bottom of the case. Once the fan motor and switch are connected to the circuit and the air cleaner housing (now the evaporation chamber) is filled with water, the unit is ready to operate. The fan sucks in the air that needs to be cooled and delivers it to the evaporation chamber. The air passes through the water column in large bubbles and exits through the filter meshes into the outlets. In bubbles, as well as when passing through grids with capillary properties, intensive evaporation of water occurs. In this case, the air loses some of its heat and cools. Evaporative plant The second design (Fig. 2) also consists of a centrifugal electric fan and a mixing chamber, the role of which here is played by a rectangular air duct, curved at the end. The air duct lies on a tank filled with water and is attached to it. A water atomizer is installed inside the evaporation chamber - a conventional atomizer equipped with a nozzle. The flow area of the nozzle is regulated by an air damper.
In this installation, water particles emitted by the spray gun evaporate. The amount of water supplied to the atomizer is regulated by turning the damper: the more it is open, the more water is sucked out of the tank. To operate the atomizer spray, you can use the MK-1 microcompressor, connecting it with a drive to the electric fan shaft. The microcompressor drive can also be carried out from a separate small-sized electric motor. The body, tank, evaporation chamber, knees can be made from any waterproof material: sheet iron, plexiglass. Grids for filters - small, from a galvanized steel or copper wire. Gaskets: hard cardboard or paronite. In the car, the unit is located under the storage box, on the floor in front of it or behind the rear seat. In the latter case, additional air ducts must be installed to cool those sitting in front. If there is an electric fan in the ventilation system of the car, then there is no need for it at the installation itself. The air conditioner can also be placed in the room, attaching a base to it for stability.
