cherry birch

Cherry birch is a plant species of the genus Birch (Betula) of the Birch family (Betulaceae).

Deciduous tree of medium size, 20-25 m high and trunk diameter up to 60 cm. Crown pyramidal in youth; later rounded, transparent, with hanging branches. The bark is dark brown, almost cherry red (unlike most birch species), uneven, dissected by many uneven cracks. The young bark is aromatic with a spicy aftertaste. Shoots in youth are slightly pubescent; later - naked, red-brown.

The buds are red-brown, thin, sharp, often on a short branch, deviated from the branch by 30°. The leaves are rounded or oblong-ovate, pointed or pointed, 6-12 cm long, 3-5,5 cm wide, heart-shaped or rounded at the base, sharply finely-doubly toothed along the edge, silky pubescent when young, adults bright green above, shiny , dull green below, on petioles 0,8-1,5 cm long. In autumn, the leaves turn reddish-yellow.

Fertile catkins are sessile, straight, ovate-oblong, 2-3 cm long, 1,2-1,3 cm in diameter. Bracts about 4 mm long, glabrous, with short, almost identical lobes.

The wings of the nutlet are almost the same width as the nutlet. Seeds ripen in September - October. The weight of 1000 seeds is 0,9 g.

It grows in the east of North America: from the southern regions of Maine and the province of Ontario in the north to the southern tip of the Appalachians in Georgia.

In Eastern Europe, it is found in the Baltic countries, Belarus, Russia.

cherry birch

Prefers deep, moist, well-drained soils, but can also be found in dry and sometimes rocky locations. Winter-hardy. Medium light-loving. Durable.

It is found mixed with maples (Acer), oaks (Quercus), beech (Fagus) and poplars (Populus). It is never a dominant tree and does not form pure stands.

Produces a valuable dark brown cherry-like wood that is harder and more durable than the European species. The specific weight of wood is 0,65-0,70.

In America, wood is used in large quantities, in furniture production to imitate mahogany, for interior decoration, etc. It is exported in large quantities to Europe.

From young branches and leaves, essential oil "wintergreen", used in perfumery, is distilled in a significant amount.

The main component of essential oil from bark and wood is methyl salicylate.

A beautiful long-lived park tree, fast growing when young. It can be used in parks, for planting alone, in groups and alleys both in open places and in partial shade.

Cherry birch, Betula lenta. Tips for growing, harvesting and storing

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

The cherry birch (Betula lenta) is a beautiful and useful birch tree native to the east coast of North America. This tree is famous for its beautiful leaves, as well as the aroma and beneficial properties of its bark.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing cherry birch:

Cultivation:

  • Cherry birch prefers sunny to semi-shady locations with well-drained soils. It can also grow in acidic soils.
  • Cherry birch plants should be planted in spring or autumn. The planting depth should be the same as for other trees, approximately to a depth equal to the height of the root. Plants should be placed 5-10 meters apart so they have enough room to grow.
  • Water your plants regularly, especially during periods of drought, to keep the soil moist. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
  • Remove damaged or diseased branches to maintain the shape of the tree and improve air circulation.
  • In the spring, before new leaves appear, add an organic fertilizer to provide the tree with nutrients.
  • Prune regularly to maintain the shape of the tree and encourage flowering.

Workpiece:

  • The bark of the cherry birch is used in traditional medicine.
  • The bark can be harvested at any time of the year, but the best time for this is winter and early spring, when the content of nutrients in the bark is highest.

Storage:

  • Harvested cherry birch bark should be dried and stored in dry places at room temperature in a cool and dry place. You can store it in glass jars or bags.
  • Dry bark of cherry birch can be stored for a year.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

People's memory works better in the dark. 16.05.2017

American scientists have found that human memory works much better with closed eyes.

The researchers set out to find out if human memory really works best with eyes closed and in the dark. A group of volunteers was shown a film they had never seen before. After the end of the viewing, all participants in the experiment recounted in detail the events shown in the film.

The experiment involved dividing people into groups. One of them was allowed to close her eyes while remembering the moments of the film, while the others were not allowed to do so. Comparing the results obtained, it turned out that by closing the eyes, a person activates his memory. All those who did this remembered much more from the material just viewed than the rest. Thus, scientists have proved that indeed, people in the dark or with their eyes closed are able to activate memory and concentrate better.
